Religious and Moral Education in the Curriculum

Religious and Moral Education provides pupils with the opportunity to explore values and beliefs from around the world. By exploring the world’s major religions, pupils are introduced to the diversity of beliefs and life experiences that exist around the world and in our own country. Through developing an awareness and an appreciation of the value of each individual in a diverse society, religious and moral education engenders responsible attitudes towards other people. The value of learning about religion, and from religion, is that pupils develop an understanding of diversity in our society and their own roles in it.

• Our programme of religious and moral education is linked to the Education Authority’s Religious and Moral Education Guidelines. At Langcraigs, pupils will be given the opportunity each year to explore an area of Christianity as well as aspects of other world religions. Pupil will learn about religious stories and festivals while also developing an understanding for how religion and belief affect the lives of people around the world.
• The aims of Religious and Moral Education are to help pupils understand the nature of religion and to encourage them to seek their own understanding of the religious dimensions of life and develop an understanding and awareness of our multicultural society.
• At Langcraigs, pupils study three world religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Each primary stage follows four R.E. topics per session. For example, in Primary 2 children will study – Harvest (Christianity) – The Nativity Play (Christianity, Welcoming a Baby (Judaism), Eid ul Fitr (Islam).
