Problem Solving Friday!!!

Have a go at the following word problems.  Some are easier than others:

 

For challenge 6, think about how many degrees are in a full circle (we know that a straight line is 180 degrees).  The circle is split into 5 sections so how many degrees would each section measure?  I hope this helps you calculate your answer.  Or can you name the type of angle?

Friday 5th June : Contractions

contraction is a word or phrase that has been shortened by dropping one or more letters. In writing, an apostrophe is used to indicate the place of the missing letters.

For example:

I am = I’m

Task One

Can you turn these words into contractions?

  1. are not
  2. do not
  3. I have
  4. is not
  5. we are

Task Two

You have made 5 contractions. Write a sentence using each one. Make sure to include a capital letter and the correct punctuation!

  • Which other animals carry their young like this?
  • What is the cat doing?
  • What colour are the flowers on the left
  • Where might the cat be going?
  • Why is the cat caring the kitten?
  • What is the weather like?
  • What is the cat thinking?
  • What is the cat looking at?

WRITING OPPORTUNITIES

  • write a ‘day in the life of a cat’ diary entry
  • Create a persuasive piece of writing persuading people to buy a cat
  • design a fact file based upon a cat or another pet
  • ​create and label a map of the cats journey for the day.

Choose one writing activity to complete and send a copy to your teacher!

Wednesday 3rd June : DIY Paper Spinner

DIY Paper Spinner

Craft up a few really fun spinners–You spin them and they hum! It’s super fun and most things, you probably already have around the house! Here’s the how-to instructions.

Supplies:

  • twine
  • cardboard circles
  • printer paper with circle template, see below
  • markers
  • scissors
  • glue sticks

Directions

1. Make 2 circles onto your paper.

2. Add colour to these circles, the more colourful, the more fun it is to see as it spins…

3. Cut out the circles and use these to trace on a cardboard box and cut out 1 cardboard circle.

4. Glue on the paper circles to the cardboard, (one on each side!)

5. Poke two holes right in the centre of the cardboard circle.

6. Take a piece of twine, or rope, about 28 inches long. Run the rope through the holes and tie a knot.

Answer the following questions after listening to the chapter:

  1. 1. When describing the Potters, Rowling coins the term “UnDursleyish.” From what you know so far of the Dursleys, how would you define “UnDursleyish”/“Dursleyish”?
    2. On the day Harry’s parents died, what were some of the strange things happening that Mr. Dursley noticed?
    3. If McGonagall is right that Dumbledore is the only wizard that Voldemort “was ever afraid of” why does Dumbledore say that “Voldemort has powers that I will never have”?
    What do you think he means by this?
    4. How are we first introduced to Harry Potter?

Tuesday 2nd June : ICT

Today we are going to be designing our very own video game character.

This character should be suitable for a child aged 7 – 11. The game has a retro theme like the games of the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Your character should be the hero of the game. To stick to the theme your character should be designed in pixels.

Pixels are the tiny dots of coloured light that make up images when displayed on a screen, like a computer monitor.

 

On page 60 of your home learning booklet there will be a template for you to use. Can’t wait to see your characters!
