Medical and Allergies

Allergies

  • A meeting must take place between the parent, class teacher, member of Senior Leadership Team prior to the start of a new session or when an allergy has been diagnosed. At this meeting, it should be established how the allergies will be handled. A Health Care Plan should be completed.
  • If your child develops an allergy through the school year. Please let the school know so we can update your child’s records and arrange a meeting.

Fordbank Primary School and Flexible Learning Resource is a Nut Free School

As a health promoting school we encourage children to have healthy snacks.  Please avoid giving your child sugary snacks to eat at school.  All children are encouraged to drink water throughout the school day and should bring a named water bottle.  Please note juice is not allowed in water bottles.

Nut Allergy

As you are aware, we have a number of children at school who suffer from serious allergies, most commonly to nuts, but also to a range of other allergens.

People who suffer from allergies can develop a severe, potentially life-threating allergic reaction.  If someone has a serious airborne allergy to nuts, it is not only eating nuts that can cause an anaphylactic reaction; being touched on the skin or smelling the breath of someone who has eaten nuts (or a product containing nuts) can trigger anaphylactic shock which can result in breathing and swallowing difficulties.

Examples of foods that should be avoided are:

  • packs of nuts
  • peanut butter sandwiches
  • chocolate spreads/Nutella
  • fruit and cereal bars that contain nuts
  • some granola bars
  • cakes that contain nuts
  • biscuits/cookies that contain nuts
  • chocolate bars or sweets that contain nuts
  • satay sauces
  • sesame seed bread/rolls
  • Kinder products (most contain nuts)
  • Praline

This list is obviously not exhaustive, so please check the packaging of products closely.

Medicines

  • The administration of PRESCRIBED medicines during the school day is at the discretion of the Head Teacher. Appropriate forms must be completed in advance of medicines being administered.
  • Only prescribed medicine supplied by the parent/carer in its original container should be administered to a child. No child should take any form of medication in school without the written permission of the parent/carer. Prescription medicines should be accompanied by Appendix 1 Permission Form which can be collected from the school office.
  • Medication must be delivered to/collected from school by an adult.
