HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Learning in health and wellbeing ensures that children and young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future.
Health Education incorporates:
Mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing –
- Planning for choices and changes
- Physical education, physical activity and sport
- Food and Health
- Substance Misuse
- Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood.
Our aim is that all of our pupils develop an understanding of looking after themselves and making the right choices to lead a healthy, happy and active life as adults. Our Health & Wellbeing Programme is progressive across the stages and is linked closely to our wider experiences and Skills for Learning, Life & Work. Our children are given many opportunities to develop these skills which link closely to HWB and Citizenship work such as regular Focus Days such as Anti-bullying, Equality themes, Fairtrade & Languages; Cultural Cafes; Caring Kettle Cafes; Bikeability and Bike Maintenance; Outdoor Learning visits to Lapwing Lodge and P7 Residential Trip to Ardmay. We work closely with our local and wider community partners such as Johnstone Day Care and Kibble. Fordbank Primary has led a range of community events that focus on developing citizenship and responsibility such as our Anti-sectarian Football Tournament and work closely with our local community police and other agencies. We use the Playback ICE (Inclusion, Citizenship & Equality) resource across all stages as well as the Caring and Connected Classroom resource in P5 – 7.
In PE, the school offers a programme of physical activities which develop a positive attitude to an active lifestyle and encourage understanding of the role of exercise in good health. Gymnastics, dance, sports and games are considered to be the core of our programme. At Fordbank Primary all pupils receive two hours of PE each week in accordance with National and local authority guidelines. All pupils take part in our annual sports day which takes place in the summer term and to which all parents and friends are warmly invited. We have very close partnership working with Active Schools who lead a range of lunchtime and after school clubs as well as helping with our various Focus Days throughout the year. They also provide further opportunities to develop HWB in the community such as Cross-Country events, Football League and Basketball tournaments.
Health and Wellbeing in Fordbank Primary is underpinned by Nurturing Relationships and we work closely with the Renfrewshire Educational Psychology team to develop nurture across the school (RNRA) and to ensure that our class and school environment is inclusive and accessible to all. We strive to Get it Right for Every Child and engage children regularly in discussions about their wellbeing linked to the 8 SHANARRI wellbeing indicators – Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Respected, Responsible & Included.
