Expressive Arts

Music

We have a progressive music programme which is enhanced by Digital Learning apps such as Charanga that teaches music skills and singing.  Much of our music is linked to our Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) topics to make the learning meaningful and motivating.

We regularly have Community Singing sessions where the whole school get together for a good old singalong – the children love these sessions which promote a sense of wellbeing and community spirit.

Some of our pupils also learn to play the chanter or Scottish drums. We have music specialist teachers who comes to support these pupils.

Our whole school is involved in leading a concert every second year which we perform to parents, carers and members of our community.  These have taken on various themes such as The Fordbank Jukebox, Music of the Decades and Musicals – they are always well attended and enjoyed by all and give the pupils the chance to develop their confidence and sing and dance for an audience.

Art & Design

We have a progressive programme of Art and Design which focuses on skills and experiences across all stages, including a focused look at famous artists.  Much of our art and design is linked to our IDL topic work.  Our children are encouraged to lead their own learning and will often choose to use their creativity skills for a range of purposes.

We have a lovely Art Gallery at our main entrance which showcases some of the artwork produced by our children.  Children’s work is displayed across our school and helps to make our environment bright and welcoming.

More recently we have make links with Science and Technologies learning (STEAM) where children are involved in using art and design skills to problem solve, create and design across different aspects of their learning.

Drama

Drama activities involve pupils in many activities such as memory games, mime, acting and role-play. As with other aspects of Expressive Arts, drama is often taught in the context of topic work or literacy and we have seen many great performances over the years such as The Toy Shop, Victorians, The Ancient Greeks and Willie Wonka!

Each year, our Primary 1 & 2 children lead our Nativity performance – these are always very creative and unique and are highly anticipated by our whole school community, especially our parents/carers who leave with huge smiles on their faces!
