Numeracy

Here at East Fulton, we use a variety of strategies and resources to ensure our children are confident, successful and happy learners of numeracy and mathematical concepts.

We use SEAL (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) in our lower primary stages to support our children’s understanding and number sense. We utilise our outdoor areas to support the learning of various numeracy and mathematical concepts in our natural environment. Our children regularly get the chance to get ‘hands on’ with number work across all stages.

All children are encouraged, through a variety of activities, to acquire skills in maths and to develop confidence in using and applying them in real life contexts.

In Primaries 3-7, children take part in ‘Number Talk’ sessions, which encourage them to talk about strategies used to complete calculations and to share ideas with others. Mental maths activities are practised daily at all stages and we emphasis the practical use of materials including computers and programmable toys.

Opportunities for active learning and engagement in maths games/ problem solving activities are key components of our curriculum. We encourage open ended, high ceiling tasks in which children can link and apply their knowledge and skills in numeracy and maths.
