Social media – its use and impact on mental health and wellbeing on young people

Findings from literature, with a focus on self-harm and suicidality.

This review sought to scope the literature regarding social media use in young people (12-18) and its impact on mental health and wellbeing. It provides an update on the state of knowledge about social media usage and shares insights into its potential for both harm and good. It specifically explores social media’s impact on sleep, its impact on young people with experience of self-harm or suicidality, and the current limitations of the literature.

The review also provides insights and recommendations for practitioners, parents/carers, and others supporting young people’s mental health and wellbeing, as well as young people themselves, regarding assisting young people’s healthy social media use.
