Literacy and English is fundamental to all areas of learning, as it unlocks access to the wider curriculum and increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life. By Literacy we mean, Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing. The term ‘text’ refers to: novels, short stories, plays, poems, reference texts, the spoken word, charts, maps, graphs, timetables, advertisements, promotional leaflets, comics, newspapers, magazines, CVs, letters, emails, films, games, TV programmes, labels, signs, posters, recipes, manuals, instructions, reports, reviews, text messages, blogs, web pages, catalogues and directories. Brediland Primary has adopted a whole school approach to developing Literacy in a real, relevant, fun and motivating way for pupils, by means various methodologies and a wide variety of resources. All staff have responsibility to develop, reinforce and extend learning in Literacy across all other areas of the curriculum.
Learning other languages enables children and young people to make connections with different people and their cultures. In Brediland Primary, children learn French across all stages and German from Primary 4 onwards.
