St Andrew’s v Johnstone High

The Under 16 boys travelled to St Andrews last night (17/2/2016) on a run of victories that had seen them establish a 2 point lead at the top of their section over Renfrew with a game in hand.

However, this match was eagerly anticipated with St Andrews having only played 4 games with 3 crunching wins.  Any positive result here would be a big step as the boys looked to secure one of the top two places that would bring a play off spot.

The match was a bit of a see saw battle throughout with Adrian Babzynski giving Johnstone the lead after clever lead up work from Steven Buchanan only for St Andrews to draw level as they came more into the game.

Johnstone continued to fight and a great drive from Greg Steven restored the one goal lead.  However, into injury time St Andrews again drew level to see the sides tied 2-2 at the half time break.

The second half saw St Andrews fired up for the task ahead and Johnstone had to do more than their share of defending with Lewis Banaghan marshalling the back line with authority, ably assisted by Matthew Stewart who had a tremendous game in his first start this season.

Fortunately, when it mattered at the other end of the park, Dylan Millar showed some wonderful skills to outfox the St Andrews defender  and draw a foul that led to a penalty which Dylan converted.  A tough match no doubt, but Dylan kept up his record of scoring in every match this season.

St Andrews did all they could to get back into the match but Johnstone defended admirably although all would have been delighted to hear the final whistle sound to herald a superb 3-2 victory to establish a 5 point lead at the top of the table.

Next Wednesday sees the return at Johnstone where St Andrews will doubtless be looking to redress the balance, knowing that they still have every chance of taking one of the play off places.

For today however, it’s all about Johnstone.  Well done to all the boys who each played an important part in this crucial win.

League table here.

Senior Netball Team Success in Scottish Cup

The girls from S4 to S6 have now made it to the quarter finals of the Netball Scottish Cup for the first time in living memory. This fantastic achievement has been made possible by the effort and dedication of the girls to make it along to training on a regular basis as well as the extraordinary commitment from their coach Miss Still.

The girls defeated Porthlethen Academy from Aberdeen in the previous round and have now progressed to the next round. We await the winners of games in the previous round to know who stands in our way to get to get to the semi finals.

Renfrewshire Senior Badminton Championships

Pupils from J High participated in the annual badminton championships at the ON-X in Linwood on Monday 1st February. Our team consisted of pupils who have competed at the event before- Charlie MacLeod, Cara Hendricks, Chloe Love, Jack Miller and Alistair Edgar.

All our pupils performed extremely well and no one placed lower than fourth in both the girls and boys tournaments. Charlie and Jack achieved joint third place and the girls secured 3rd and 4th.

Alistair managed to win the boys tournament in a tight final. This completes a remarkable achievement from Alistair in his time at J High as he has now won this tournament 5 of his 6 years at the school- his only defeat coming to the flu in 5th year rather than any opponent.

Well done to all who competed!!!

Challenge Tanzania

With Christmas and exams in January, it’s been a low key start to the new year for the Tanzania World Challenge group in Johnstone High.

Things are beginning to get in the swing now with a series of bag packs seeing all the team involved in their favourite weekend pursuit.

This coming Saturday sees the team in Morrisons in Johnstone.  Hopefully local support will see a great return for the group fundraising effort.

The last group activity saw the team raise £1300 (shared with the music department) at the Christmas concert and raffle where a great turn out on the evening saw a very generous crowd supporting the dual causes of World Challenge and the musical talent of various bands and singers from the school, in what was a really entertaining evening.

The World Challenge group will shortly be looking to split into the 2 separate teams that will travel to Tanzania.  Each team will then choose their own itinerary for what they intend doing in country, which is when the whole experience becomes very real indeed.  And highly exciting!

Under 16 Football v Renfrew High

After a long lay off due to bad weather, exam commitments and lack of referee availability, the Under 16 boys finally got back in action with a home match at the sports hub against Renfrew High.

The previous meeting resulted in a 4-3 victory for Renfrew with the boys doing well to fight back from 4-0 down on a poor pitch.

A tough match was expected.

However, long lay off or not, the boys came out flying and spent much of the first period camped in the Renfrew half.

It wasn’t long before the first goal arrived courtesy of Greg Steven with a super-cool finish.  Composure in front of goal is perhaps the one area that Greg has been lacking this season, but he would show plenty of composure throughout this game in a sensational individual performance.

With barely 20 minutes gone, Johnstone were 3-0 ahead with a Greg Steven hat trick.  It certainly wasn’t a one man show though with every player in the team on top form, and Cameron Coughtrie emphasised this with an outstanding finish from a free kick from way out to take the score to 4-0 and that man Steven would round out the half with another goal and 5-0 at the break.

The tempo dropped a little in the second half but there was still time for 4 more Johnstone goals, a bizarre own goal involving Johnstone’s usually so reliable Irwin Gray and a truly outstanding save from the same player.

At the end of the game Johnstone had a fantastic 9-1 victory with 6 goals for Greg Steven and excellent strikes from Lewis Banaghan and Dylan Miller.

Not one player played anything less than excellent and hopefully the boys can build on this result in the matches to come.

Higher History

Where possible pupils should purchase ‘Migration and Empire 1930-1939’ by Simon Wood, Hodder Gibson.  This is an excellent text book and relates directly to their current work in class.  Having their own copy allows pupils to make notes/annotations and study at home.  If you receive an EMA this would be a useful purchase.
