Johnstone High v Barrhead High

The Under 16 team played their final home match of this year’s campaign at the hub against a Barrhead team who had failed to claim any points in their league matches this season.

On paper it should have been straightforward, but the reality was rather different.

Johnstone started the match lacking their usual drive and enthusiasm and Barrhead showed that they are a much better team than their league position warrants.  Much of the opening half was played out in the middle of the  park with little in the way of chances to test either keeper.

However, with only a couple of minutes remaining in the half the breakthrough goal came – and it went to Barrhead.  1 – 0 at half time.

A bit of a shake up int he second half saw captain Lewis Banaghan move into the midfield with Harvey Brown dropping back and Johnstone started much sharper with greater drive and commitment.

It wasn’t long before a cool finish from Greg Steven had the match all square again at 1 – 1.

However, this didn’t prove the spur to greater things and within 5 minutes Barrhead were again in front with a straightforward finish just outside the 6 yard area.

Johnstone kept plugging away with Dylan Millar and Daniel Smith effective on either flanks and a second equalising goal soon arrived with Cameron Coughtrie tapping in from close range.

The team seemed to take spirit from this goal and the winning goal duly arrived with 15 minutes to play with Daniel Smith getting the touch that matter.

The final score was 3-2 to Johnstone and the boys will now top their section and head into the post-season playoffs in good spirits.

Before the playoffs there is one more match to come against St Benedicts away this coming Wednesday (23rd March).

The boys will be looking for one more victory to top off what has been a brilliant league campaign.  Well done to all for a battling victory.

S3 Girls Netball

The S3 girl’s netball team played their second round of games at St Andrew’s Academy in Paisley last week. Despite arriving late because Mr Connelly went to Glennifer HS by mistake, the team performed extremely well for only their second outing as a team and narrowly missed out on victory in all of their games against some very strong teams. The girls are building for the future and anyone interested in coming along should see Miss Still in the PE department.

Johnstone HS v Garnock Academy Rugby Match

Johnstone HS played Garnock Academy at both S3/4 girls and S5/6 boys teams at Garnock Rugby Club in Beith. The standard was exceptionally high and all pupils represented the school with distinction. In both games pupils were undergoing National Assessments for their PE course and they all achieved very high marks indeed which has put them in a great position to achieve well in their final award for the subject.

Johnstone HS ran out comfortable winners in both games and the effort and commitment shown by both the girls and the boys was exceptional. Well done!

S1/2 Renfrewshire Badminton Championships

We had 7 pupils from S1/2 competing in badminton tournament at the ON-X sports centre on Monday 29th February. For the boys we had Dan Auld, Sam London and Josh Gray and for the girls Emma Kinnear, Morgan Morton, Ellie Spence and Amber Dickie.

All of them played and exceptionally well and represented the school with distinction. Dan Auld, Josh Gray, Amber Dickie and Emma Kinnear all qualified for the end of year finals- the Renfrewshire Secondary Games. Well done to them and we wish them all the best in the finals!

Pupil Bulletin

We’re all on count down!

As Mrs Hollywood points in the most recent bulletin, some have only 25 school days left before completing their school career, but hopefully not their education, which continues for life.

Mrs Hollywood also mentions the steps being taken to transform the school entrance. We hope you noticed?  Also find out how girls and boys from Johnstone High have excelled in recent sporting events.  Well done to all those who take part and if any are interested, there is the possibility of volleyball taking off for the younger groups.  Mr Rankine has something to say about the wonderful world of engineering and there are important notices about our school show Annie! – Fame and it starts here!
