Grease is the Word at Johnstone High as Their Biggest Show Yet Approaches
Pupils and staff at Johnstone High School have been readying themselves for a show to remember! The biannual show this year is “Grease” and this salute to a ‘simpler’ time of young love and fast cars proves to be their biggest production yet. Over 100 pupils have volunteered their time to participate, both on stage and off, nearly tripling the usual cast. It is clear that it has created quite a buzz!
Johnstone High bought the rights to “Grease” in August last year, held auditions in January and started rehearsals in February. So it’s fair to say that, with at least 1 rehearsal every week since, the cast and crew have been working extremely hard.
Though the production got underway in August, the idea to perform “Grease” has been in motion for even longer as staff felt it would play to the strengths of older pupils – especially boys – encouraging them to take part.
Teachers from music, P.E. and social subjects have all donated their time and energy to the show. Cast members Rachel Aird and Hana Watson have stated they feel that the show has not only been enjoyable but has provided them with a highly valuable learning experience.
The interest shown in this year’s production reflects the evolving nature of performing arts at Johnstone High. There are aspirations for further focus on drama which is currently taught within English: “It’s a very interesting possibility to have a drama teacher within the school,” says Deputy Head Mr K. Gilbert.
Another valuable asset to pupils showcasing their many talents in this year’s show will be the addition of a new state of the art recording studio and dance studio. This will not only encourage many more pupils to participate in physical education, but will provide more artistic pupils with a place to express themselves and rehearse for future shows. “Overall, Johnstone High is looking to expand the number of pupils taking part in activities relating to performing arts,” stated the Musical Director Miss Keenan.
Modern studies teacher Miss Brown, who is linked to ticket sales, said, “I will be bringing some of my family and we are all very much looking forward to it! It’s a great opportunity for members of the local community to come together to see just how talented our young people are.”
All the hard work the pupils have put into their production of “Grease” will be showcased on the 17th, 18th and 19th of June at 7pm. Tickets are £8 adult, £6 child and only £25 for a family of 4. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets should contact the school office on: 01505 322173.
