Under 16 Football vs Barrhead

Another road trip on Thursday 10th October as the Under 16 team made the journey to face Barrhead.

Not an easy one for team selection with a number of players unavailable for a variety of reasons, but a 13 man squad was cobbled together to make the trip.

The 1st half was a very even affair with neither team making clear inroads on goal.  It was looking like the first goal would be critical in separating the teams, but half time came with neither team on the scoreboard, and with both goalkeepers having little to do.

From a Johnstone perspective, this was partially due to the excellent central defensive partnership of the usually free-scoring Lewis Banaghan and Chris Kerr, making a first start for the school team in an unfamiliar position.  A brilliant understanding from the boys and a really solid defensive performance all round.

The 2nd half and Johnstone struck first blood with a soft goal converted (he claims) by Daniel Smith.

From this point onwards the whole shape of the match changed, and there was only one team in it.

Further goals followed from Dylan Miller, Ben Lauchlan and Cameron Coughtrie and a very convincing 4 – 0 victory which had seemed unlikely after the closeness of the match in the first half.

Some fine performances all round with Cameron Coughtrie especially impressive and a good showing from Lewis McIlroy on the right side of midfield as the boys went to the top of their league section.

Under 16 Football v Renfrew High

A 2nd outing for the Under 16s brought a ‘road trip’ all the way to Renfrew.

The boys were a little miffed to arrive at the bumpy grass pitch and find that there were no nets in the goals – no matter, let’s play football!

The usual fluid passing, moving and general upbeat temp were missing to a large degree for much of the first half and it was no real surprise that Renfrew scored 2 goals.

A rally towards the end of the first half and a mazy run culminated in a fine solo goal for Lewis Banaghan.  This seemed to help to raise the boys energy levels and a little more composure in from of goal could have seen them go into the break level.

The 2nd half started much as the first had begun – which spelt trouble for Johnstone.  Again, the energy levels that are usually apparent were missing and Renfrew High were soon 4 – 1 with the job looking done.

However, once more the boys rallied with Harvey Brown commanding in the middle of the park as usual and goals from Dylan Miller and a fine long range strike from Cameron Coughtrie brought the score to 4 -3 and left the match on a knife edge.

Harvey Brown brought a fine save from the Renfrew keeper as the seconds ticked away and unfortunately the final whistle sounded soon after.

On the balance of play, a deserved win for Renfrew but Johnstone will know that they can do better and will look to show this in the next game.

A debut substitute performance for Matthew Stewart brought an eager performance with the energy that hopefully the whole team will be able to show in the next match.

2 games down and 1 win and 1 defeat, but as the league table shows it’s all to play for with Renfrew and Glennifer playing out a draw in their last match.

League Table

Johnstone High v St Benedicts U16

Johnstone v St Benedict’s 21/9/15

The first game of the league season for the ever-keen squad saw a home tie and a ‘derby’ against St. Benedict’s at the sports hub.

First issue – deal with the kit clash.  Both teams in green meant a mad scramble to find an alternative.  The blue kit was unearthed, but the team are clearly facing  a sock crisis for the season.  An arrangement of green, blue, black and dark blue rugby socks was not ideal, but game on nevertheless.

The first 20 minutes saw the ball permanently in the St Benedict’s half of the field.  Some good individual play from Johnstone but work to be done on passing, movement and shooting meant that a series of early chances were missed.  Greg Steven hit the post and Daniel Smith put  a shot narrowly past, but both boys will feel that they should have scored.

However, a goal duly arrived and there was a bit of fortune in it, with the ball more or less bouncing off Steven Buchanan into the net.

A somewhat lucky goal but richly deserved on the balance of play.

Shortly afterwards Irwin Gray had  his first touch of the ball to take a bye kick.  His next touch was to lift the ball from the back of the net as St Benedict’s scored with their first direct shot at goal.

1-1 at half time didn’t tell the full story of what was a generally dominant performance from Johnstone.

Unfortunately, by this stage Steven Buchanan had been taken off and gone to hospital with a broken shoulder bone.  As ever, Steven made no great fuss of this bad injury and hopefully he’ll be fully recovered as soon as possible.

Into the 2nd half and Lewis Banaghan soon made it 2-1.

A better performance from St Benedicts this half and they managed to equalise again for 2-2.

However, the Johnstone boys kept battling and substitute Finlay Ross made it 3-2, with a swift follow up from Daniel Smith meaning the final score was 4 -2 in favour of Johnstone High.

A broken collar bone and a sprained ankle for Greg Steven in a game that was played in a very fair spirit provided the down side to a good opening to the season.

Next up is Glennifer away on Tuesday 29th.

Early World Challenge Fund Raisers

There’s only 643 days until departure to Tanzania (which is actually a long time so don’t worry).

Fund raising initiatives are happening.

Paige had a Candle Party and she hoped to make a £100 profit from it.  She made £500!  Absolutely brilliant.  Paige would really like to thank everyone who helped her out and came along to support her.

Bradley organised a 7 a side football tournament in school for S1 and S2 pupils.  Not an easy thing to organise something like this with so many people involved, but he pulled it off with some solid support from friends.

Everyone involved had a great time and the event raised £87.

Good job.

Team Tanzania is Here

The 2 week window for applications for World Challenge has drawn to a close (with a couple of people still looking to apply – don’t worry, it will happen) and the team for Tanzania is all but set.

Team Nepal started with 16 challengers and 12 travelled.  Team Borneo started with 21 and 17 travelled.

Team Tanzania starts with a whopping 39 challengers, and hopefully there will be no mishaps along the way seeing all 39 travel to Southern Tanzania in June of 2017.

A first challenger meeting has taken place with a whistle stop tour of how the program will work.  Much of the next number of months will involve the challengers getting to know each other well (which may take some time with 39 of them), and getting started with fund raising opportunities.

Fund Raising Initiatives

Already a team have taken part in a Caribbean Day celebration in Lochwinnoch with a “Sure Shot Striker Challenge” and a home baking stall.

One challenger has a Candle Party this coming weekend and next week a 7 a side football tournament will take place in the school, instigated and organised by another one of the challengers.

Each of the challengers left the first meeting aiming to bolster the 5050 club where the funds raised are split equally (50-50, gettit?) between the team fundraising pot and the prize fund for the monthly winner.

Last month’s winner received a modest £42.  Can the team ensure that their hard work and keen bargaining skills mean that next months winner receives a mighty £200?

5050 Winners

We shall see.

World Challenge Applications

Application Deadline

The deadline date for World Challenge applications for the Southern Tanzania trip is fast approaching.

Monday 14th September is the date.  For anyone who is still considering joining up on the expedition team and have concerns that they will not meet this data for completion of the application, then get in touch with Mr McGivern in the school, and we will ensure that a place os reserved if required.

27 pupils signed up so far (with 2 more online applications being processed at this very minute) with another few still likely to come in.

Without doubt this is going to be the biggest World Challenge expedition that the school has run so far.  And the best?  We’ll do everything that we can to make sure that this is the case.

Challenger Meeting

There will be lunchtime meetings every Tuesday in Computing room IT4 for those challengers signing up.

The first meeting will be this coming Tuesday (September 15th) at 1.20 pm.  Bring your lunch, and let’s get Team Tanzania started!

World Challenge 3 – Destination Southern Tanzania

The 3rd Johnstone High School World Challenge expedition has been launched at S4 and S5 assemblies and then to interested parents at the Information Evening held in the school on 31st August.

Potential challengers and their parents/guardians now have 2 weeks to decide whether to take the plunge and sign up.

Applications should be completed either online using the designated code provided on the night or by completing a paper application form.

Entry deadline day is September 14th.  Paper forms should be handed to Mr McGivern in the Computing and Business Education department where forms (and the code for online entry) can also be collected if required.

It’s going to be awesome!

Here’s a video of one of the 2 teams who spent 3 weeks in Borneo this summer:

A newsletter of the team’s experiences will be produced shortly and published on the blog.

Under 15 Football vs St Ninian’s B

Hard on the heels of the fantastic victory against Gryffe came another home tie for Johnstone against an equally impressive St Ninians B team.  Coming the day after the Gryffe match, there were fears that tiredness would become an issue.

In the event another fine team display saw Johnstone win the match 1 – 0 despite a last minute penalty miss from the usually so reliable Lewis Banaghan.  The awarding of the penalty saw a second yellow produced to a St Ninians player followed by another St Ninians player receiving a second yellow for dissent.  In all 3 St Ninian’s players were dismissed in a match which had very few hard tackles and no niggles between the 2 teams, so it was disappointing for the match to end up this way.

In the event, even at 11 vs 11, the Johnstone boys had another fine match forcing a series of excellent stops from the very impressive St Ninians goal keeper.  Lewis Harding, filling in for the injured Irwin Gray, was much quieter and only really called into action on one occasion when he made an excellent save down low to his right with the score at 0 – 0.

When the goal came it was delivered by Dylan Miller with a super cool finish under the outcoming keeper.

Great goal Dylan and another great performance from the team.  No goals this time, but a man of the match winning performance from the skipper Lewis Banaghan.

Under 15 Football vs Gryffe

The Under 15s played Gryffe at home on Monday 16th March.  After a crushing 4 – 0 defeat the previous week to the same team the boys were keen to make amends.

In the event, the whole team was magnificent in a match where a 3 – 1 victory was secured against a Gryffe team who had a man sent off.  Regardless of this, Johnstone grew in confidence as the game wore on after conceding an early goal and it was no surprise to see them run out victors in the best team performance witnessed so far this season.

A great performance from Adrian Babczynski covering at full back and on this performance he’ll be very hard to dislodge.

A hat trick from none other than Lewis Banaghan was the icing on the cake, but special mention goes to the man of the match, Greg Steven who ran his socks off and provided a constant threat coming in from the right side of midfield.

A great performance against a previously unbeaten Gryffe team  that leaves the possibility of winning the combined Under 15 A/B section.

Under 15 Football vs Glennifer

Tuesday the 10th of March  2015 saw the team make the short trip to Houston to play an undefeated in the league Gryffe team with the boys keen to make amends for their first league defeat the previous week at St Luke’s following on from 4 impressive victories.

A closely fought first half saw the team unlucky to go in at the break a goal down after a bit of a defensive mix up.

The second half saw a spirited start from Johnstone and a great run by Greg Steven saw him ghost past 3 players and hit a fine shot which unfortunately struck the post before rebounding to safety.  A gaol at this stage would have been more than deserved.

Unfortunately, the Gryffe number 10 then scored with a fine header to put them 2 – 0 up which cause Johnstone heads to drop a little.

A late mini-collapse resulted in a final score of 4 – 0 to Gryffe who on the day deserved the victory but the margin of victory was certainly harsh.

Ultimate disappointment but special mention must be made to Harvey Brown who had an outstanding match and was a clear man of the match.  harvey covered every inch of the pitch in a high energy performance including crunching tackles, precision passes and intelligent runs with the ball at his feet.  On no account did Harvey deserve to finish on the losing side in a match where he, as ever, took the knocks that came his way with customary good grace.  Nobody epitomises the spirit of “it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts” more than Harvey.  Well done that man.

Next up on Monday 16th March is a chance of revenge with Gryffe heading to Johnstone for the return tie.

No team has come to the Johnstone Astro Dome and come away with the points.  Let’s maintain that proud record next week.
