Sincere thanks to the pupils who turned out on Saturday past to sing in M&Co and in the Wellmeadow. Mrs Johnston was happy not to be singing a solo and is grateful to those who came along even if they aren’t in the choir.
CHOIRS
Mrs Johnston is delighted to have 65 pupils from P4-P7 who are keen to come along to an after school choir. The choir will start this forthcoming Monday – 21st November and will run in term time from 3.15pm-4pm in the music room. We will mostly be learning the songs for the GLEE competition which is at the end of April 2017. Seems like a long way off but we will need the practice time.
The Nativity choir is still on a Monday lunchtime but sadly most weeks many pupils forget to come along. We are due to sing at the switching of the lights on ceremony next Saturday – 26th November at round 4.15pm. Mrs Johnston hopes she doesn’t have to sing solo!
A small group of solo singers will be entertaining the folks down at Beech Manor Care Home on Thursday 15th December in the afternoon. This will be in school time but letters will go out nearer the time.
After the Christmas break the Perform in Perth choir will be during skills hour. I plan to select 30 pupils from P2-P7 for this choir. I am hoping the pupils will be honoured to have been chosen and be happy to come along to skills hour. We won’t sing for the entire hour.
New Term
We have had a very busy start to the new term in the music room. Mrs Johnston has held auditions for the soloists for Christmas and is delighted to have 9 pupils who have made it to the finals! More details later!
Pupils are learning the songs for our Christmas Nativity which is Tinsel and Tea Towels and Mrs Johnston is enjoying teaching those songs.
Mrs Johnston is very happy and excited this morning. Last night I received confirmation that Newhill has been accepted for the GLEE competition this year! WOW! I will be checking the songs out from this weekend! More news later!
After the October Holidays
We have had a very busy term in the music room. Every week pupils have had the opportunity to play percussion instruments. We have been revising how to play both tuned and untuned percussion instruments. We have been enjoying new additions to our Charanga Music School. We have learned songs for assembly and most recently Harvest has been our theme for those. Pupils have been learning about the instrument families of the Orchestra including the Brass, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion groups. Looking forward to next term we will learn the songs for our Christmas Nativity. I always tell the children that the retail trade and Mrs Johnston are the only people allowed to mention the word Christmas in October! I have everything ready to go and am very much looking forward to teaching the children the music and songs. A favourite time of year for me! Sticking with tradition P3 will have the main parts and all other stages will support the singing of the songs. Pupils in P4-P7 will have the opportunity to come along to a lunchtime Choir Club where we will learn Christmas Songs. We already have a booking in the diary for Beech Care Manor Home so I am hoping for a positive response for the choir. Further details about the Nativity next term. Mrs Johnston wishes all a very happy and safe October break when it comes.
Playing our instruments
P4 are enjoying playing the tuned percussion. Happy days in the music room!
Our Music Scheme
Charanga Musical school is described as the modern way to help teach Curriculum for Excellence. Through music, learners have rich opportunities to be creative and experience inspiration and enjoyment. Performing and creating music will be the prominent activities for all learners. Through these activities they develop their vocal and instrumental skills, explore sounds and musical concepts and use their imagination and skills to create musical ideas and compositions.
Pupils and Mrs Johnston have enjoyed the varied activities for over a year now. Mrs Johnston continues to review new materials as they are added.
New Term
Welcome back to a new year! Another exciting year ahead in the music room and Mrs Johnston is eager to get going. A key focus this year will be raising the standard of playing instruments. Any P4-P7 pupil who wishes to bring a recorder is most welcome. I will teach the notes at instrument time.
French Songs
In music recently the pupils have been learning some French songs using the vocabulary they have been learning in class. The favourites have been Un, deux, trois – a counting song where they sing Je sais compter which means I know how to count. Also the song Tous les jours which features the days of the week and simple reflexive verbs. We love dancing along to this song. Mrs Johnston in the music room wishes everyone a happy and safe summer.
