Ragtime

Ragtime

This style developed from the marching bands in America from around the late 1800’s.  Pianists in the Chicago bars tried to emulate the oompa rhythm created by the instruments.  This ended up being the vamp created by the left hand on the piano playing bass, chord, bass, chord. The right hand weaved syncopation around this vamp. A famous composer was Scott Joplin.
