At Blackford Primary, our curriculum is thoughtfully designed in line with Curriculum for Excellence and national guidance, providing every child with an inspiring, inclusive and high‑quality learning experience. Learning is broad, balanced and carefully planned across the eight curricular areas: Literacy and Languages, Mathematics and Numeracy, Health and Wellbeing, Expressive Arts, Sciences, Social Studies, Technologies, and Religious and Moral Education. Pupils begin learning French from P1, with opportunities to explore additional languages at different stages of their learning journey.
Learning at Blackford is active, engaging and connected to the real world. Through interdisciplinary learning, playful and outdoor approaches, educational visits, and meaningful partnerships with our community and employers, children are encouraged to make sense of their learning and see its purpose beyond the classroom. These rich experiences help pupils make connections across subjects and apply their learning in motivating, real-life contexts.
A strong focus is placed on developing skills for learning, life and work, including literacy, numeracy, digital competence and wellbeing. We explicitly nurture Scotland’s meta-skills—such as self-management, social intelligence and innovation—helping children to become resilient, reflective, creative and confident learners who are well prepared for an ever-changing world.
Children at Blackford are active participants in their learning. They are encouraged to make choices, share ideas, set targets and contribute to planning through discussion and reflection, promoting ownership, independence and motivation. We work in close partnership with parents and carers, consulting regularly and providing clear communication, including advance information on sensitive aspects of the curriculum such as relationships, sexual health and substance awareness.
Our curriculum fully embraces the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence, supporting children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Progression is carefully planned using the Experiences and Outcomes, ensuring every learner benefits from a high-quality Broad General Education that supports both achievement and personal growth.
At Blackford Primary, learning is exciting, purposeful and future-focused—empowering every child to thrive, now and in the future.
