World Book Day 2023

The Library Committee organised our World Book Day activities on Thursday 2nd March. Everyone dressed up, brought in some books for a book swap, did some book related activities and we had a visit from Sheila Garson to talk about her Shapinsay A-Z book.

Children in Need 2022

Well done everyone!

The Pupil Council sold Children In Need wristbands, badges and rulers. People were invited to wear pyjamas to school and some parents came in to do face painting. Everyone from Nursery to P7 joined in some creative Pudsey challenges and riddles. All together, the school raised a  massive £100!

Joe’s Boxes

Today we all had an amazing time with Joe, who came in to talk to us about Judaism. Both primary classes learned a lot about the Jewish faith, and were able to ask some really good questions.

We can’t wait for our next visit from Joe!

Made in Orkney P1 – 4

This term P1 – 4 have been learning about things made in Orkney. We wrote to lots of local businesses and went to visit several places. Thanks to everyone who helped us!

Ivan’s boatshed

Ivan and John-Robert spoke to us about boat building in Shapinsay. It was really interesting!

Orkney Isles Preserves

Thanks to Glynis and Lynsey who showed us how the preserves are made at the Jam Factory. Thanks for the drop scones and jam too!

Sheila Fleet

Martin and Leanne helped us find out about how jewellery is made at Sheila Fleet.

Ortak

We went to Ortak to see how they made jewellery too. Thanks to Derek and Alison who showed us round.

Kirbuster Farm Museum

The whole school went on a trip to Kirbuster Farm Museum. The older class have been learning about the Victorians, and the younger class about farming, so it all fitted well. Nursery children were very excited to go on a trip too!

Thank you to Sue for showing us round, and to Shapinsay Community Council for funding our travel.

STEM day in Kirkwall

Today we went to King Street Halls in Kirkwall to take part in the Orkney Celebration of Engineering.

We had two teams (P1 – 4 and P5 – 7) and we made displays of our STEM work that we have been doing in school. We had to present our work to the judges.

We had lots of STEM challenges to take part in, and we learned about a TESLA electric car. We heard from people in work in engineering and learned about possible careers.

And at the very end of the day, we found out that P1 -4 had won the Primary Prize for their presentation!
