Hatching Chicks

We incubated Brahma eggs and they hatched on Tuesday 25th May.

Some important things we learned about using an incubator were…

  • while incubating eggs do not turn it off!
  • you can use an ovascope to check the eggs are birded and to see the chicks develop inside
  • hen eggs take (approximately) 21 days to hatch
  • stop the incubator turning on day 18
  • keep the incubator at the correct temperature 37.4 to 37.6 degrees c.
  • keep the humidity constant
  • do not open the incubator while they are hatching
  • when they break the shell with their beak it is called pipping
  • when they hatch and fluff up put stones in their water so that they don’t drown in it
