Orkney Islands Council provides assistance with free school meals and clothing allowances to families on a low income who meet the eligibility criteria. To be awarded this assistance, proof must be provided that you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit.
FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Orkney Islands Council provides assistance with free school meals and clothing allowances to families on a low income who meet the eligibility criteria. To be awarded this assistance, proof must be provided that you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit.
From 1 April 2026 and subject to Parliamentary approval, it is anticipated that children and young people will be eligible to receive free school meals through targeted provision if their parents or carers are in receipt of any of the following:
· Income support
· Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
· Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
· Pension Credit
· Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
· Universal Credit (where their monthly earned income is not more than £995, up from the current level of £850)
Free school lunches will continue to be made universally available for all children in primaries 1 to 5, as well as children in special schools. In addition, children in primaries 6 and 7 will continue to be entitled to free school meals during term-time if their families receive the Scottish Child Payment.
