Take A Moment

Take a moment…

…to go to your happy place!

The Coronavirus lockdown is stopping us being able to go to visit friends, to the park, the cinema and I know some of you have even had holidays cancelled. We have to spend a lot more time at home with our families and that can feel stressful and frustrating at times. It might help to remind children that they are not “stuck” at home, they are “safe” at home.

Have you ever heard the phrase “go to your happy place”? This week’s relaxation allows the children to do just that. Using their imaginations, they can create a safe, peaceful, happy place where they can take a break.

When I do this with pupils at school we would draw out what our special, happy place looks like. We would talk through the sights, sounds, smells and tastes and add details to the drawing. Many children enjoy putting the pictures up on their wall so they can see them before they go to bed at night.

Give it a try…

For other ways to “travel” without leaving your home why not try

Take a Moment

It is normal for our children to be affected by the changes, stress and uncertainty that come with the Coronavirus lockdown.  You might find they are quicker to become frustrated, angry or anxious. They may even go back to behaviours or activities they have long grown out of. This is their way of coping. Try to provide  lots of reassurance that the lockdown will come to an end but for now, focus on activities that the children can enjoy right now – reading, playing, singing or dancing.

Younger children might benefit from reading through Lucy’s in Lockdown

https://www.lucysblueday.com/product-page/lucy-s-in-lockdown to help them understand or start to talk about their emotions. Click here to  download a free copy

Here is a link to a reading of the story.

A great way to help children manage their emotions and sleep better is to practise breathing techniques. Taking time out to rest and relax each day with deep breathing allows our minds to become clearer and feel more refreshed and focussed. With practice, our children will have better control over their breathing. They will be able to use their breathing techniques when they are feeling nervous, angry or frustrated and discover that things can change in a matter of seconds!

Mrs McMillan will introduce a breathing technique or relaxation activity each week that you might like to try. This week it’s “Belly Breathing”

Welcome Back

Welcome back to what is a very unusual term 4! I hope you managed to enjoy some fun together during the Easter break and have been passing the time with lots of chocolate eggs.
During the school closure staff will continue to upload lessons daily to our class blogs and there will also be some fun challenges for families to enjoy together.

If you need to contact the school urgently during the closure please dial 07561691685. This number will be available daily between the hours of 9.30am and 3pm, you can also leave a message outwith these times and someone will get back to you.

Life for us all is out of sorts at the moment and we all look forward to the time when some small sense of normality may resume and we can all return to school. In the meantime please stay home and stay safe.
