Remembrance Visit

Primary 7a and Primary 7b visited the War Memorial in Uddingston Main Street.  The walked down last Tuesday morning to visit the site as part of their World War 2 topic.  They read the inscription on the memorial and discussed the meaning and thought behind this.  They also held a minutes silence for those who gave of their lives for our country in this and the last century.

The children have successful used their local environment to extend their learning.

  1. I have learned that a war memorial can have speech like:- ‘We shall never forget those who died for the sake of thier country in two World Wars.’.
They can have many designs, symbols and many fonts.
They can help people remember their loved ones and be proud of what the soldiers have done.

  2. I enjoyed our day out to see the war memorial I enjoyed drawing a sketch and writing beside it what it was made of. It was for the first and second world war. I also liked when we had to have a 2 minute silence to pay respect for the soldiers that died to save our country and were willing to give up there lives for the country.

I also liked when somebody from bay 16 read in Flanders Feild a poem by John McCrae a canadian doctor, soldier and poet who wrote it on the 3rd of May 1915 in the trenches in world war I. Its about the soldiers dying ther and the poppies growing in Flanders Field.

  3. We have been learning about remembrance day in our world war two topic. We went a walk down to Uddingston. We have a two minutes silence on the 11/11 of the 11 minute. We have poppy day,we wear poppies on our shirts to honour those who died during world war two.

  6. In our World War 2 topic I have learned that people fought for our country and war memorials are made to remember the soldiers who died. The visit to Uddingston helped me to realise how important it really is. The poem was really enjoyable while we were having the two minutes silence.

The two minutes silence in school was really good too because we got to go to the hall. Remembrance day is really important and is on the 11th of November.

  7. I really liked lerning all about remembrance day and especially going on the trip to see the war memorial. When we were there we had a 2 minuite silence to remember everyone who died in the war to save us and people who have passed away as well. Everyone liked it when we had to try sketch the memorial and most people found it fun. In school we wore poppies and the primary sevens had a BIG 2 minute silence in the hall and put lots of good effort into the decorations. Well done everyone.

Remembrance day is held on the 11th of November and normally a one or two minutes silence is done to pay respect to those who died. This is done at 11 o’clock. Most schools do this. People have made poems about the wars and the soldiers and the people who died.

  14. Rememberance day is when we take 2 minutes to remember all the soliders who fought during all the wars whether they were years ago or now a days. Most schools take just 2 mins with their heads down on the table or close their eyes and our class went down to the memoril gardens in Uddingston to see the epitaph and we wrote poems about rememberance day and saved them on to a memory stick.

  19. Remembrance day is so important to everyone. Many people lost people in all of the wars and some were badly hurt.Remembrance day is on the eleventh because the war stopped on the 11 day on the 11 month on the 11 hour.Remembrance day is when you have two minutes silence to remember all the soldiers that risked their lives to save our Country.

Loads of people wear poppies every year to show that they remember and appreciate the people who died for us. We wear a poppy and nothing else because the people that died died on a field and nothing else grew except poppies and that is why we wear poppies and nothing else to remember them.

I enjoyed going down to see the war memorial it was very interesting to see what people wrote on them.Even though it did not say names on it, it was still very good and everyone in that community must be proud of the people that fought in the war.

  20. Remembrance Day is very important because we have to remember about all of the people that fought for our freedom. The people that has lost their lives for us had families and their families loved them so much. Some people are still living that was in the wars.

I really liked the remembrance visit to have the one minuite silence. We all had a giggle but we had to remember most about all of the people that died.

  21. i thought the remembrance visit was really good it looks like three stones with a cross on top of it. On the bottom stone it said to the glory of god and the honoured memory of those who fell in the two world wars 19-14 to 19-18 19-39-to 19-45 there name liveth forevermore. It was quite sad because all those soilders fought and died for us.I read a poem called flanders fields the person that wrote it was john mcrae he was a canadien soilder the reason he wrote it was because he went to see were his friends had died and all he could see was poppys he thought it looked like blood

  22. I enjoyed the memorial service it was very interesting and it made me feel a bit sad , just because they have died while fighting for our freedom. Remembrance Day is important to everyone and is quite upseting as many people died during World War 1 and World War 2.

Every year on the 11th of November at 11o’clock most people have a minute silence .This is to honor and memorate the people who died and fought for our freedom.

In Australia they also celebrate remembrace day but it is not called remembrance day it is called Anzac day. In Austalia they have remembrace day on a different day from us. Most people wear poppies to hounor the people who died. Remembrace day is a very important day to everyone and also upsetting to most people.

  24. rememberance day is a special day to remember all the soldiers that fought in the war and died for us .Pepole wear poppies to show respect to all the soldiers nurses and doctors that had thier own part in the war .

  25. remembrance day is about all the soldiers, nurses and doctors that won the war for us if it wasnt for them Germany could have won the war and conquered most of europe. The tradition of wearing a poppy on remembrance day was started by Moira Micheals who also wrote a poem in reply to the poem In Flanders Fields wrote by medical officer John Mcrae during world war 2 after he seen the battle of Flanders Fields.

  26. I enjoyed Rememberence day visit to the Cenotaph. I got to see the statue an read some of the messages, remembering the people who fought for our freedom and gave there lives up for us.

When we arrived back at the school we drew a picture of the Cenotaph and wrote a story about our visit. Earlier as the clock struck eleven we fell silent for two minutes to pay our respect to the heros just like the world fell silent on11/11/11………..LEST WE FORGET….WEAR OUR POPPIES WITH PRIDE

  27. I enjoyed learn about remembrance day because it made me realize how important the soldiers are and some soldiers lost their lives young. I think about the families they ace left behind some had young children. Nurses and doctor also lost their lives by running into battle field trying to save the soldiers.

In class we made poppies and wrote a sentence about someone who we remember in the middle some people chose to remember the soldiers and some people chose to remember people on their there family. We also wrote poems about the wars to.

  28. I enjoyed learning about remembrace day because i didn’t realise how important the soldier were. Some soldiers lost their lives young and some had children and families and left them behind.

  29. The things i have learned about Remembrance Day is that the soldiers that died fought for our counrtry, the fighting stopped on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th hour. The other thing that i learned was that during the war the only thing that grew in Flanders field was the blood red poppies. We also have a minute silence on the 11/11 11 hour to hounour the soldiers that died during the war.

  30. Remembrance day is to remember the soldiers that fought in all of the wars for us. We have a minute silence on the 11th month of the 11th day on the 11th hour because that is when the war ended.

We wear poppies to honour the soldiers that fought in the war. We also wear them because it was only poppies that grew on flanders field. When we went to the cenotaph we had a minute silence. The cenotaph was very interesting. When we got back to class we drew the cenotaph .The saying LEST WE FORGET means never forget

  31. Remembrance day is traditionlly a day to remember the fallen and the veteran of all the wars britain was in.On 11/11 they have a two minute silence.

  32. I enjoyed the walk to the war memorial thank you to Miss Brogan,Miss Fullerton and a stutent teacher Miss McAleenin .As you know our topic is world war 2 today we made gasmasks.I also enjoyed making a sketch of the memorial.

  33. The things i learned about rememberence day is the cenotaph monument and how special it was to the family of the soldiers who fought and died years ago. We learned how brave and heroic the soldiers were who fought for the freedom of our country. It taught us about the history of the war,how and when it happened and ended and how we are proud to wear our poppys and having 1 mins silent for the brave soldiers who lost thier lives and the sadness it left the familys they left behind, they would be so proud. We wore our poppys with pride that day.

  34. I really enjoyed the walk down to Uddingston to see the cenotaph. It was three big stones with a cross on top. One of the stones was engraved with the dates of the second world war 1939-1945, which my great grandfather fought in. It made me realise how lucky we all are to live in a free country and not have to worry about war.

After we sketched the cenotaph, we walked towards the church for a minute silence and my friend read a poem called “In Flanders Fields,” which i felt was very touching.

    LEST WE FORGET!!

  35. I think that the day we visited the cenotaph was a great day. We walked down to the cenotaph at the Uddingston Cross then crowded around it. After paying our respects, we walked down to the front of the church in Uddingston, we heard a reading of the WW1 poem, In Flanders Fields.

It was a very emotional day and I think that everybody enjoyed it. And to all of those who fought in wars and the people who are still fighting. We will never forget their bravery.
