S4 Options

In Taylor High School students progressing into fourth year will enter the senior phase. Each learner will choose 7 subjects to study in S4 from the 9 that they currently study in S3.

Maths and English are compulsory subjects which pupils must continue into S4. They unable to choose new subjects.

In addition, learners will undertake core PE, RE and P.H.S.E.

Learners will follow the S4 Senior Phase Curriculum Structure outlined below:

Pupils in S4 will continue with their chosen 7 subjects at Nationals level:

  • National 3 is a unit based course which is marked Pass or Fail. There is no external examination.
  • National 4 is a unit based course with no external examination. It is assessed within the school and externally verified by SQA staff.

National 5 is subject to ongoing assessment by the school to ensure that appropriate standard is being met. It also includes passing an additional external assessment which may be carried out by more than one method (depending on the subject), for example a project and a question paper which will be assessed by SQA . National 5 qualifications are graded A – D.

Should you require any help or support please don’t hesitate to contact your Pupil Support Teacher, Mrs Wilson.

  • Talk with your son or daughter about how they are getting on in school – what they like or dislike, and how they feel about their subjects. This can guide their decision on what subjects to progress with into Nationals.
  • Talk about options and encourage them to start thinking about what they might like to do in the future. Pupils have access to My World of Work website to support them with their decision making.
(additional information can be found on their registration class Microsoft Teams page)
  • Generally, it’s a good idea to encourage them to keep their options as open as possible. They may already have some ideas about what they want to do in the future, but these may change.
  • Encourage them to avoid biased views about what subjects or careers are ‘suitable’ for girls or boys.
  • If there are any family members, neighbours or friends that have careers that interest your child, encourage them to ask questions about their experiences or if there is an opportunity for some work experience.
  • Talk to Mrs Wilson, Mrs McGraw or the careers adviser if you need more information or you have any concerns about their choices.
  • Encourage them to ask for help and advice in school.
