  1. Good morning boys and girls.
Please be sure to send me an email about a BUTTER FLY GARDEN after you discuss this with Mrs Curran. When you are searching for it, you might find other interesting kits and I would be more than happy for you to make suggestions. No crocodile pits or dolphin enclosures though…..or spiders (I don’t like spiders).

    1. Hi, me and my mum found a brilliant website – https://www.insectlore.co.UK. You can buy a giant 45cm high Butterfly Garden with 10 live caterpillars with food for £25. The class could go into small groups and watch the lifestyle changes from caterpillar to butterfly.

      1. Well done Scott. I have just spoke to Mrs Stewart and she will get one ordered for you and your classmates. Mrs Kerr wants you to let her know when it arrives as our new children from nursery are going to learn about The Very Hungry Caterpillar when they come on 2nd June. I’m so excited!

        1. P3 – that’s your butterfly kit ordered. Can’t wait to see your caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies.

          1. Thats brilliant news- thank you Mrs. Stewart. We can’t wait for the butterfly garden to arrive! Also, a big thank you to Scott and his mum for researching and finding out about where and how to order the butterfly garden! You’re a very responsible citizen Scott- well done!!

      2. I am so pleased you have ordered the Butterfly Garden. I can’t wait to see the caterpillars turn into butterflies and all the different colours they will be. I will let Mrs Kerr know when it arrives for the nursery children.

  2. There are 4 stages of the life cycle of a butterfly.

    1. A butterfly lays an egg on a leaf.
    2. The egg hatches into a caterpillar and it works hard to eat the leaf it was born on. Caterpillars eat lots to grow but their skin does not grow and they have to shed their skin about 5 or 6 times.
    3. When the caterpillar has stopped growing they make a cosy home. This is called the pupa or chrysalis and is where the caterpillars body starts to change.
    4. The butterfly comes out of the chrysalis and its wings are scrunched up but after 3 or 4 hours the butterfly can fly and show its very colourful wings. This is my favourite stage.

Stage 3. Pupa. The caterpilar makes a pupa which is were it turns into a butterfly this is called metamotasis.Stage 5. The butterfly bites through the pupa and when it comes out its wings are all soggy and it waits a while for them to dry them it will fly away.

  4. There are four stages that turns a caterpillar into a butterfly.

A girl butterfly lays eggs close together. The eggs are small and round. About five days later a tiny worm creature will hatch. The next stage is the worm creature turns into a caterpillar and eats leaves and flowers. The caterpillar grows very fast as it eats a lot. The caterpillar then makes a chrysalis which is brown and green in colour to help look like its surroundings.. The last stage is the chrysalis hardens to look like a shell and then opens up and a butterfly comes out and flies away. Butterflies can be lots of different colours. This butterfly will eventually lay eggs and the process starts all over again.

  5. Life cycle of a butterfly

A butterfly begins as an egg laid on a leaf. Inside is a caterpillar which is the size of a pinhead. The caterpillar hatches 4 days later, it’s very hungry so it eats its own eggshell and leaf it was on. The caterpillar gets bigger and its tentacles grow. The caterpillar hangs upside down then it’s skin splits behind its head and it wriggles from its skin and becomes a pupa. The pupa is a shell that protects the growing butterfly. Inside the mouth changes to a straw like tounge and grows wings within 2 weeks. The shell then bursts and the butterfly comes out but it can’t fly for a couple of hours as its wings are wet and wrinkled. The butterfly pumps fluid called hemolymph into its wings to make them bigger and flys off to find its first flower for some nectar.

Stage 2 the caterpillar- when it’s ready the caterpillar leaves its egg by eating its way out, it then it eats the leaves on the plant its on.
Stage 3 The pupa- once it’s a fully grown caterpillar forms its self in a pupa, this hardens over time to protect it.
Stage 4 The butterfly- Once the butterfly is ready to come out the pupa splits open and the butterfly leaves the shell. It now waits until its wings dry then it flys off and looks for flowers to feed on.
