May in P5

What a whirlwind the last few weeks have been in P5!

This month, P5 tackled one of life’s biggest modern questions: Is social media good for children? The class explored the pros and cons of apps, influencers, online safety, screen time, and whether children under 16 should be banned from using social media altogether. We held a very passionate class debate — and let’s just say some pupils could definitely have careers in politics or courtroom drama! After lots of discussion, the children decided that social media can have more pros than cons if used sensibly and safely. There were thoughtful conversations about staying kind online, limiting screen time, and making smart choices. We were incredibly impressed with how mature and balanced their opinions were… although we suspect a few arguments may have secretly been motivated by a desire to keep access to TikTok!

We have officially conquered fractions! After adding, subtracting, simplifying, and probably dreaming about fractions at night, we’ve now moved on to decimals. Soon, we’ll also begin learning about time — so if your child suddenly starts telling you exactly how late bedtime is in digital and analogue form, you’ll know why.

Health Week arrived with a bang and brought some unforgettable experiences. Yes… we dissected a real lung. Some pupils were absolutely fascinated and wanted to become surgeons immediately. Others looked like they were about to need a surgeon. There were gasps, shrieks, “ewwws,” and at least one dramatic retreat to the other side of the room. Educational? Absolutely. Smelly? Also absolutely.

We also explored healthy eating with a fruit and vegetable tasting session. Some children discovered new favourites, while others discovered that celery is apparently “the worst thing ever created.” Strong opinions were shared. Very strong opinions. Alongside this, we spent time learning about mental health, mindfulness, and looking after our wellbeing. The children took part in calming art therapy activities and had thoughtful discussions about emotions and self-care. It was lovely seeing everyone slow down, relax, and get creative.

From fitness activities to bike riding, the class kept active all week long. Energy levels were high and laughter was constant.

We can hardly believe we are heading into our final month in P5. This year has absolutely flown by, and June is already shaping up to be a busy and exciting one. Here’s to making the last month of P5 full of memories, laughter, learning… and hopefully no more celery! 🚴🫀📱🍎
