When pupils first come into Primary 1 they each have a P.7 buddy to help them cope with the first few weeks in their new school.
We visit them in class, remind them to eat their snack at the right time, show them where the toilets are and teach them how to behave in the dining hall.
After a few weeks they don’t need us so much, but we always make sure a few of us are available in the infant playground during intervals, just in case anyone is unhappy.
Sometimes we start a game so that everyone can join in. If we see someone left out, we might help them to find a friend…or start a game with them.
There are still plenty of adults supervising in the playground, but we each bring an extra pair of hands to help, ears to listen, and eyes to spot any problems quickly!
However, it’s not just Primary 7s who get the chance to take on these positions of responsibility. This year we have a regular group of helpers from Primary 5. In Stepps it’s not your age that makes you a Responsible Citizen…it’s your attitude and approach to learning. We are always looking for opportunities to promote Skills for Learning, Skills for Life and Skills for Work.
