We were delighted with the number of our P4-P7 pupils who took part in the recent National Sumdog challenge. Well done everyone!
Pictured below are the Top 5 Sumdog Champs from Stepps Primary. All 5 children achieved excellent results.
We are also delighted to have had one of our P7 pupils in the top 50 students in the whole of Scotland. An excellent achievement considering over 30,000 pupils participated in the challenge. Amazing!

Maths Week Scotland is a new initiative to help everyone see maths positively.
Throughout this week we celebrated maths in Stepps Primary School. We experienced the benefits and fun of maths in a range of new and exciting ways.
In small groups, we devised and delivered a lesson to our fellow classmates, teaching a specific strategy of subtraction.
We also worked together during Blether Stations – a problem solving activity in which we were required to discuss and solve real life problems using a wide range of mathematical concepts.
In teams, we completed against one another in a maths quiz.
We also gave up our lunch times to take part in a ‘Maths Wi Nae Borders’ competition – aimed at S4/S5 pupils!
This was very challenging, but we have worked well together as a team to crack it! We even had some help from other classes – thank you!
Individually, we took part in the Ultimate Times Tables Challenge and played Sumdog on our iPads and computers, both in class and at home.

As part of Maths Week Scotland in our class we have been busy both outside and inside doing active maths.
We really enjoyed ourselves. We loved solving the Limousine problem where we had to work out all the different combinations of who can sit next to who. We were passengers in the limo and mathematicians who used our mathematics brains to solve the problems. We also had fun jumping on the stepping stone numbers and calculating answers.

We love working with numbers in our class and really enjoyed working on our place value activities outside in the sun. We can identify the value of numbers up to tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands. Writing with chalk is lots of fun too!

We love going to gym and having lots of fun. One of our sessions each week this term is all about Fitness. We have been working out and increasing our heart rates at different stations. We are trying to increase our stamina and keep going at each station without stopping until the whistle blows for rest time.

We went out into the playground to collect some resources from nature for art work. The children were asked to create a picture of their choosing using some of the things that they had found. Here are some of our ideas.

We invited the active schools coordinator, Ross Sweeney, in to do some orienteering with Primary 4S. The children were all advised that they should come prepared for any weather conditions. And just as you might have imagined we had just stepped out of the door when the rain started but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. The children had to work cooperatively in teams to achieve the learning intentions. The first task we did involved the children having to read a very simple map and then select and arrange various objects to make different faces.
Then we went into groups of three and each child had a different job to do. We had a map reader, a recorder and a reporter/calculator operator. The children had to work together to read the map and then find the letters or numbers that they had to use. Every team worked very well together and even although some made mistakes they didn’t give up they persevered and went back to find the correct solution. Thank you Ross.
