Teachers assess their students daily, throughout the school year. This can be through observation of what the learners do or say, or evidence found in what they make or write.
Assessment has a variety of purposes. It is used to support the learning of the individual, taking into account not only knowledge and understanding, but also skills and personal attributes. It can be used to provide a summary of learning, allowing us to track pupil progress and collect evidence that this is in line with national expectations. It will also contribute to planning next steps, ensuring that learning and teaching plans are relevant to your child’s needs.
Our pupils are also trained in self assessment. Teachers share the Learning Intention and Success Criteria for each lesson, ensuring that pupils are aware of the purpose of their learning. From the youngest age, our learners know what is expected of them and how they can achieve this.
Assessments, progress and next steps will be shared with you at our planned Parents’ Meetings twice a year, and in annual written reports issued in June.
The national expected levels of progression are as follows:
Early Level – Pre-school to P1
First Level – P2 to end of P4
Second Level – P5 to end of P7
Third and Fourth Levels – S1 to S3
(Fourth level aligns to National 4 Qualifications)
Senior Phase – S4 to S6 in school, college, workplace or community
Please note, these are average expectations. These levels will be reached by some children earlier or later.
