Primary 5F Term 2 Letter

November 2019

Dear Parent/Guardian

I hope you all had a lovely break over the October week. We are already working hard and are excited about the fun events which will be taking place this term. We will be very busy preparing for our St. Andrew’s Day performance and the Carol Service. This is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during the second term.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn phoneme families (sh and ch), spelling rules (an introduction to prefixes and suffixes), common words and tricky words which will be consolidated through class work and homework. The children will be reading a novel and also working on poetry this term. As part of the reading programme the children will continue to develop their use of the reading strategies whilst reading their novel and working on poetry. Within Big Writing the children will continue to develop their use of vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (V.C.O.P.) within the genres of narrative and poetry.

Numeracy

In Primary 5 the children will develop their understanding of 2D Shape and 3D Objects (recognise 3D objects and their properties), Money (calculations of money, use of money within the world and money word problems), Time (telling the time, durations, using timetables and calendars), Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and Decimal Fractions this term. The children will participate in Active Maths, partner work and written tasks.

Religious Education

During the second term the learning will focus on November (Scottish Faith Heritage and the Faithful Departed) and The Life of Jesus (Healer, Teacher and Jesus’ time on earth). We will also be learning about Advent (signs, symbols and themes of Advent).

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E. the children will be developing their skills within Rugby and Football; sending, receiving, co-operating and competing). For Dance we will be using Scottish Country Dancing and party dances as our stimulus. As part of the Health and Wellbeing programme the children be learning about how they record their achievements in school through Seesaw and how their achievements are celebrated outside of school. The children will be learning about the importance of feeling included and including others using Christmas as our stimulus for learning.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term our topic has been named ‘Give a Smile for Christmas’. The children will be learning how different groups within our community have a range of needs and how those needs are met. We will be organising an enterprise activity to raise funds to enable us to give a smile to a member of our community; by a giving a small gift. As a class we will be visiting Netherton Care home, on three occasions, to spend time with some of the residents. The children will engage in conversation and sing a selection of Christmas songs for the residents.

Science

We will be learning about sound (animal communication and vibrations) and light (reflection, shadows and the properties of light). Additionally we will be learning about the structure and function of the sensory organs and how we respond to these.

Thank you in advance for your support this term, please use your child’s homework diary to communicate any concerns/comments.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Debbie Ferns

Primary 4 Term 2 Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to the start of Term 2 which promises to be a very busy and exciting term with lots of exciting events planned.

Here is a brief overview of the learning that will be taking place within Primary 4 this term.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy programme for reading, writing, spelling, talking and listening.  This programme will enable children to further develop their literacy skills through exploration of a range of skills and strategies.

Spelling

The focus phonemes for this term will be ‘ie’ and ‘oe’ and children will explore different written representations for each phoneme.  Furthermore, they will employ spelling strategies and rules whilst learning a range of common and tricky words.

Reading

This term the children will be reading a selection of novels within their reading groups. Some of the novels will include George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Owl who is Afraid of the Dark and The Diary of a Killer Cat. This will allow the pupils the opportunity to apply the Active Literacy Comprehension strategies which were introduced to them last term during our novel modelling block. We will also work with a range of non-fiction texts this term apply our comprehension skills and linking to other areas of the curriculum.

Writing

This term we will focus on the genres of narrative and recount. Children will use a variety of stimulus to write interesting narrative stories focusing on ambitious vocabulary, paragraphing and punctuation. We will also write Recounts where pupils will use their own experiences and familiar stories to write about in their own words using their skills from narrative genre.

Numeracy

In numeracy, children will extend their knowledge of addition and subtraction through a range of active and written tasks.  The children will develop their mental agility through Number Talks and will be given opportunities to work collaboratively.  They will also investigate 2D and 3D shape and their properties, and create symmetrical drawings and patterns.

R.M.E.

Religious Education will be taught through the ‘This is Our Faith’ programme.  This term we have been learning about the Our Lady and the Rosary during the month of October. As we move into November our focus shifts towards Saints and the faithful departed. We will investigate the life of some saints and look at the qualities of what makes a saint and how this applies to our life. During the month of December we will look at the story of Advent and Christmas.

Health & Wellbeing

This term we will explore what it means to be Responsible with a focus on internet safety.

During P.E lessons we will develop our dance skills as we prepare for our festive celebrations.

Our P.E. days this year are Mondays and Fridays.  We would encourage children to keep their PE Kit in school from Monday to Friday to ensure that they always have it with them and refrain from wearing jewellery on these days.

Social Studies including ICT, Science and Art

Our interdisciplinary learning focus this term will be “Living Things & Their Habitats”. The children will compare a variety of habitats and explore a climate/country which is very different from their own; studying animals and plants that may be found there. This learning will also link to our Science focus which is food chains and what living things need for survival. The children will participate in a mini beast hunt and use their experiences in writing and art.

Please do not hesitate to communicate any comments or concerns using the homework diary and keep up to date with our learning through twitter.

Many thanks,

Mrs Bridge & Mrs Colton

Term 1 in Primary 5B

Primary 5B have enjoyed an excellent first term with Miss McShane and Miss Burns.

Although we have moved around a little due to the ongoing rewiring, we have really settled into the new school year and have already achieved so much.

Our topic this term focused on New Lanark. We learned all about David Dale, the founder of the mills at New Lanark, and Robert Owen, his son-in-law who took over the mill after him and who improved things for the people who lived and worked there. We learned that the machines in New Lanark were powered by the Falls of the Clyde and spent time making our own water wheels as part of a fun STEM challenge! Take a peek below to see one in action!

We also enjoyed spending some time outside taking part in a variety of outdoor learning activities and even getting a sneak peek of our brand new MUGA during our Rights Respecting Try Everything Day!

We can’t wait for next term to continue the learning and fun!
