March in Primary 4

Primary 4 have been very busy this term. For our interdisciplinary topic this term of ‘Food and Health’ we have been doing lots of fun and interesting tasks to find out more about keeping healthy by eating the right foods and how keeping active helps us stay healthy and strong.

We have recently started a ‘Healthy Soup Project’. For this we make soups that are both healthy and tasty and we ask all the children and staff in the school to try it. We then send letters home to ask parents to buy the ingredients and recipe card so they can make the soup at home with their child.

We are doing this because we want to encourage healthy cooking at home and we want children to be interested in cooking and eating healthy foods. The money we raise pays for the ingredients and any profit we make is donated to SCIAF. We have all really enjoyed taking part in cooking and trying new foods. We have fun making the letters and recipes, taking in and organising our orders and working out how much money we need! In fact it ties in quite nicely with us learning about money in our maths! We like organising each class coming to sample our soup and even the cleaning up afterwards isn’t too much of a chore! We work in groups to organise the bags of ingredients and give them out to the children who have placed orders. Clearly though, the best thing about our soup project is making the soup and getting the chance to taste it!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far and we hope you have enjoyed making the soup as much as we have!

March in Primary 7

Primary 7 would like to welcome you to our school website and thank you for reading our very first blog post.

This term we have been busy learning about World War Two for our interdisciplinary topic. So far we have researched significant figures and sketched the individuals that played a significant role in the war. We thoroughly enjoyed this lesson, particularly working with charcoal. Also, we researched the impact of the war on the home front and, in particular, the Clydebank Blitz. We designed artwork to represent a skyline of the blitz attack. Check out our artwork below!

To take our learning beyond the classroom, we have been taking part in a homework project. We have been very busy designing Anderson shelters. A huge effort has been made by all and the class have a wide variety of designs using various different materials and resources.

Furthermore, to celebrate World Book Day we worked alongside our peers in our collaborative learning groups to design book covers of some of our favourite children’s books. This was great fun and the final products are wonderful.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read our blog and we hope you enjoyed reading about our learning as much as we enjoyed taking part.

March in Primary 3

During the last two weeks, Primary 3 and Miss Allan have been looking after chicken eggs, as part of the Living Eggs Project. The eggs were delivered to the school in a special incubator to keep them at a nice warm temperature. Two days after this the first egg hatched! We all suggested names for the first baby chick and put them in a hat. Ellie’s suggestion was picked, and the chick was christened Mrs Pecker. Primary 3 later did an assembly for parents and carers to showcase all their amazing work. We really enjoyed looking after the chicks and are very happy they have all found new loving homes!

February in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been looking at sound and light in our Science topic. We have been learning about shadows and how they are formed, we know the meanings of the terms transparent, translucent and opaque and have made eye-catching stained glass crosses which will look fabulous on our new windows when they are finished.

We also chose an inventor of our choice and created our very own 3D creation of their invention. We did this as a homework task and the results were outstanding. We showed our models at our class assembly and we enjoyed telling the children all about them.

we have been working through the new Maths Pathways and this term we have covered; Maps and Coordinates, Measure, Probability and Chance and we are currently working on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We are enjoying working more actively during our maths time.

Primary 3/2 would like to welcome you to our new school blog and our very first post.

Since returning to school after the holidays, Primary 3/2 and Miss Cassidy have been enjoying learning about our latest topic, Water.

We have had a fabulous time experimenting with the different ways we could change water. We learned that freezing temperatures turn water to ice and made our own ice cubes. We especially enjoyed making yummy ice lollies by mixing water with diluting juice and then freezing. They helped us all to cool down after a fun P.E lesson on Friday.

We also learned that we could change the colour of water by adding a drop of food colouring. We enjoyed experimenting with all the different colours we could make by just adding water.

We then worked with Primary 2/1 and Miss Burns to make our very own Dream Jars just like The BFG’s! We used glitter, glue, oil, food colouring and water to make our jars and we even wrote about our most memorable and exciting dream during story writing.

As you can see in the pictures, we have had a super time so far this term.

Scientists in Primary 5

Welcome to our first blog post from Miss O’Donnell and Primary 5 within the Junior/Senior Department of our school.

Primary 5 have been investigating the importance and uses of water, and this week we decided to do some experimenting.

The boys and girls had learned about soluble and insoluble substances and they wanted to try it for themselves. After lots of discussion, they decided to investigate if salt, brown sugar and crushed chalk would dissolve in hot and cold water.

The pupils then collected all the equipment which they needed – salt, brown sugar, crushed chalk, water, tubs, spoons, etc and set about experimenting.

There was lots of fun and amazement in the class as the children saw the salt and brown sugar dissolve before their eyes especially when the sugar changed the colour of the water. The children had thought that the crushed chalk had dissolved in cold water but we decided to check by filtering the solution through the filter paper.

Sadly, the chalk hadn’t dissolved to form a solution and the children learned that chalk was insoluble.

The boys and girls had lots of fun. Watch out – Scientists are about!

Check back regularly for updates from the Junior/Senior Department.

February in Primary 2/1

Primary 2/1 and the Infant Department wish you all a warm welcome to our new school blog. We hope you will enjoy reading all about what we have been up to in class and in the wider school!

Since coming back to school in January, Primary 2/1 and Miss Burns have been enjoying learning all about our latest topic, Water. We have had a great time pouring, splashing and playing with water. We thought of lots of different words to describe it. We have also been investigating how temperature changes water. We learned that freezing temperatures turn water to ice and made our own ice cubes. We also learned that when water is made hot enough it will boil and, eventually, turn to steam. We looked at some of the everyday uses for boiling water, even making a cup of tea and boiling an egg with Primary 2/3!

In Maths, we have been learning about estimation and rounding.  We have been showing what we know through lots of interactive games and activities. As you can see in the pictures, we have really enjoyed it!

Remember to stay tuned for more updates from our school!

Our First Post from Mrs. Oates

Welcome to our new school blog.

I hope you find the information helpful and it keeps you up to date with what’s going on in our school. We will be updating the blog and our newsfeed on Twitter regularly with news and events from our school.

Our pupils and staff have been very busy this week.

On Wednesday night we held a transition meeting for our Primary 6 & 7 pupils, who are preparing to move on to Our Lady’s High School.

On Thursday the whole school attended Mass in St. Brendan’s Church. Well done to Primary 7, who led the Mass and to the whole school for their beautiful singing. Also on Thursday our Nursery class enjoyed a visit from ABC Music. In the evening, we hosted the Sacramental meeting for parents of our Primary 3 and Primary 4 children, who will be making the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist.

I hope that the children enjoy their February holiday. The staff will be very busy on Wednesday during the in-service and we look forward to seeing the children when they return to school on Thursday.
