A catch up with P4

The past few weeks we have super busy in p4 doing lots of different activities. A couple of weeks ago we had David the fireman coming in to talk about fire safety and how he makes a difference within the community. We learned so much and are grateful for David coming in to visit. image image image

We we were so excited and we asked lots of interesting questions. David even let us try on the fire brigades uniform to show what equipment he needs to protect himself. It was extremely heavy.image image image image

David also taught us what we should do if there is a fire within the house. We had to use our big loud voices to shout on him and tell him which room we were in. He came to our rescue and demonstrated a fire man’s lift!!

Also we have been doing some art in class and learning all about the artist George Seurat. He is famous for creating the art style pointillism and using dots to create fantastic pieces of  art. We thought we could try it for ourselves by using an under water theme. Check out some of our fantastic pieces.

‘Our School – Episode 5’

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Today, our group went to the Digital Learning Suite. We found a lot of interesting resources!

In this area of our school, you can find lots of computers. There are also posters on the wall. These posters tell you how to stay safe when using the computer. We learned that you are not able to bring food or drink into this room. You can use these computer to research new topics. We like this room because you can create interesting documents. We also liked the fact that you can save important information to your computer.

Thank you for looking and stayed tuned for the next episode of ‘Our School’.

See you soon!

A busy time in Primary 2!

The last few weeks have been very busy in our class. We have been learning all about shapes and positions in maths and we can use lots of new vocabulary to describe where an object is. In literacy we have been using nouns, verbs and adjectives and we know how to make our sentences more interesting. We have also been enjoying our topic called ‘when gran was a girl’ and we loved our trip to Summerlee. We found out about toys from the past and had lots of fun trying out all of the things our grans might have played with. At the end of the workshop we made our own Christmas toy which we got to take home!

Primary 1 have been enjoying our athletics topic in P.E. recently. We have been studying how we can move the different parts of our bodies when we are  sprinting. Have a look at our great technique!

Primary 1 reading, writing, adding and counting down to Christmas.

What a busy week we have had! Everyone has worked hard and behaved well yet again.

Here, you can see that we have been writing sentences dictated to us by the teacher. Using our sounding out and blending skills, we are able to write the words that she says. Some of the words we just know because we have been learning our common words since starting school. Look how neat our writing is too! Everyone has found it hard to write “p” and “y” correctly by hanging them on the line in our jotters – but with lots of practice this week…we think we’ve got it!

When we are reading our books, we practice making sentences. By looking for the word with the capital letter and the word with the full stop we can give ourselves a head start. Everyone makes a jumbled sentence, then reads it aloud to the group to check it makes sense. image image

Now that we can add, we are practicing our skills in different ways – using numicon to make our own adding sums, playing adding games with a friend and using addition apps. image image image image

Besides all of this….we are counting down to Christmas. This lucky girl got the golden coin on the 7th! image

As if this wasn’t enough, we had an absolutely fabulous time at the pantomime on Thursday. It was bright, dazzling, glittery, filled with singing and dancing and larger than life characters. We are sooooo grateful to Mark Millar for this wonderful Christmas gift. Here is a little picture of everyone in Primary 1 at the panto! image

Christmas Comes to P6!!

We have been beyond excited and enthusiastic about our Christmas Writing project! For the month of December, we are working on our own Christmas Books which we need to write, proof-read, edit and improve. We don’t want to give too much away as we’re hosting a Book Launch just before the Christmas break in our lovely new library. Look out for the invitations everyone!

Here’s a sneak peek at what we’ve been up to…

We can’t wait!

St. Columba

We have been learning about our Catholic Faith Heritage and different Christian Pilgrimage sites across Scotland.

St. Columba was a very interesting Saint who worked on an Scottish island called Iona. He came from Ireland with 12 followers and helped to spread Christianity in Scotland. He and his monks were scribes who created a very beautiful and famous manuscript called the Book of Kells. It contains the 4 Gospels and is ornately and painstakingly decorated.

Mrs McLean also shared some photographs of her visit to Iona this year. We saw the beautiful Abbey that has been built where Columba’s monastery used to stand. We hope to visit Iona one day…

The Super Solar System

We have come to an end in our Solar System topic, but not before we investigated the relative sizes of the planets. This was a huge task and a great team effort!

First, we watched a video about the size and scale of the planets. Then we extracted relevant information from the internet and recorded what we found in a table…

image

Next, we learned about scale in maths and used the internet again to help us scale down the planets to sizes we could work with. Then we calculated their scaled down diameters (this is how a circle is measured). We found out that the radius of  a circle is half the diameter and we needed to know this measure to be able to draw our planets. Again, we recorded our measures in a table and rounded the numbers (using our rounding decimal skills!) to make them easier to work with…

image

After all that, it was time to get hold of a maths compass! We found this VERY tricky to start with however, by the end of the lesson, most of us were able to draw at least one planet to scale, using the maths compass…

Next up, we cut out our planets and painted them…

image

Then we lined up our planets to compare their relative sizes. Look how tiny Earth is compared the Gas Giants!

You can see our model Solar System outside our classroom!

Primary 1 use their thinking skills.

Last week, we found out lots of information about St Andre. Then we talked about what we had learned. After this we used our thinking skills to make up a question that we would like to ask St Andrew.

image image image image

It was tricky and we really did have to think hard….but it was worth it. Some of our questions are great!

We also started to get ready for Christmas and put up our tree. We think it looks brilliant.
