The Super Sun!

We have been learning all about the Sun as part of our Space topic, and it’s been fascinating! Here are some interesting Sun Facts that we placed on our Sun wall display…

DSCN2734

  • The Sun is a big ball of hot gases AND it’s actually a star!
  • The hottest part of the Sun in around 15 MILLION degrees celsius!
  • It’s about 90 MILLION miles away from the Earth and around 1 MILLION times bigger than it!

We used our Sun Facts in the ICT suite to make a PowerPoint about our learning. The new skill that we learned was how to copy and paste pictures from the internet onto slides. We know how to make pictures smaller and bigger and we can move them around too!

We have also been learning about the why the Sun appears to move across the sky during the day. We put our scientist hats on and discovered that it’s not the Sun moving – it’s the Earth! The Earth spins on its axis one full turn every 24 hours, which is the length of a full day! So for some of the day, we are facing the Sun and we have daylight. Guess what happens when we face away from the Sun? That’s right – we have night time. We made Sun Clocks so that we could observe what happens to the Sun during the day…

We marked our Sun Clocks at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm…

Interesting! We’ll analyse the results of our Sun Clock experiment tomorrow and write them up like real scientists!

A fun filled week of learning.

In primary 1 we showed Mrs Carlin how clever we were when we sounded out and blended to make some three letter words.

In primary 2 we were able to show how much we have learned about numbers to 100 by working on some smart board activities.

After our learning we are very good at thinking about our progress. Sometimes we choose a colourful bear to tell the teacher how we have done. Green means we are very confident. Orange or yellow means we need a little more practice. Red means we need lots more practice.

On our visit to the Oratory today, we found a picture of a happy person in the bible bag. We talked about the meaning of this and read the gospel for Sunday. We learned that the way to true happiness is to live like Jesus.

We had a nice surprise today when our teacher brought us in some spider cakes for our Halloween!

As part of our topic, we have been looking at autumn fruits and vegetables. We explored the colour, shape and texture of a pumpkin and then created our own “starlight pumpkin” pictures.

A Spooky Day!

Well since it was the day of the Halloween disco, we had a themed day in Primary 4. Our class was transformed into a Haunted House complete with spooky sounds, groans and moans. Mrs McLean was not torturing us. Honestly!

We started the day off by learning about the features of instructions. We made a Goblin Stopping potion to help us understand the purpose of instructional writing:

Next, we made our own evil, disgusting potions. Mrs McLean was super impressed with all the writing work today but here are the Star Writers who did especially well…

In the afternoon, we looked at silhouette art and drew our own spooky houses. We used chalk pastels to blend 4 different colours to make a halloween sky…

They’re looking great P4. Well done!

And finally, here are some superstars of the day…

Have fun at the disco p4!

Primary 1/2 make a positive start.

Here we are exploring “balancing” in gymnastics. We are getting quite skilled at keeping our bodies steady.

In the ICT suit we have been exploring healthy eating through design and technology. We were designing fruit salad today! Mmmmmmm.

We also use our Learning Logs to talk about and record our thought about learning. Here are a few entries from today….

At this time of year we also set ourselves new targets. As usual, our Buddies were on hand to help us…
