Higher Modern Languages

Higher Modern Languages Courses enable learners to read, listen, talk and write in a modern language, and to understand and use a modern language. Learners also develop language skills of translation, and apply knowledge and understanding of a modern language to real-life contexts.

This Course is made up of two mandatory Units.

Modern Languages: Understanding Language (Higher)

The purpose of this Unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop  reading and listening skills in the modern language, and to develop their knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language in the contexts of society, learning, employability, and culture.

Modern Languages: Using Language (Higher)

The purpose of this Unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop  talking and writing skills in the modern language, and to develop their knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language in the contexts of society, learning, employability, and culture

 Higher Spanish

Pupils who have passed National 5 Spanish can proceed to take Higher Spanish. The skills that pupils have already started to develop in National 5 will be further developed in Higher, i.e. Reading, Listening, Writing and Talking. The additional skill of Translation is also introduced at Higher level.  The Talking element of the Higher is assessed internally and there is a final, external SQA exam in the summer term.

Spanish resources

Pupils are recommended to have a bilingual dictionary for use at home to assist in the completion of any homework.

Pupils are advised to use the on-line dictionary site www.wordreference.com  as this is reliable.

Homework should be done when given on the interactive resource www.pearsonactivelearn.com used by the Department. Pupils have been issued with their Username and Password to allow access at home.

Senior pupils are also advised to log in at home to the Scholar website and complete work therein and practise key skills such as Reading and Listening. The site is accessed here. All pupils have been issued with Username and Password details.
