The children have now successfully completed a 6 week programme of Mini Kickers sessions in conjunction with NL Leisure. The sessions, which have taken place in Calderhead High School have provided the children with a range of learning opportunities with coaches, Darren and Mya guiding them through each session. Through fun and energetic games such as ‘tunnel tig’, ‘banana tig’ and the ‘pirate ship game’, the children have been learning how to listen to and follow instructions, share space with others and work together as part of a team. Using a football the children have also had opportunities to develop their balance, hand-eye coordination and movement as they have built upon skills such as dribbling the ball and stopping the ball with their foot, each week. By taking turns to kick the ball into the goals, the children have experienced a real sense of achievement once they score, and have been encouraged to celebrate this by the coaches every week. We would like to thank all of the parents who helped to walk the children safely to and from the school every Tuesday. This was a lovely opportunity to engage in conversations with the children as we ‘walked and talked.’

Walk & Talk
After the success of Big Chef Little Chef, Jen Dawson (Homelink) and Isabel would like to invite you to take part, with your child, in our Walk and Talk sessions, starting on Friday 1st June, afternoons only.
Outdoors is special, it is meaningful, stimulating, motivating and fun and it can develop many areas of learning and support the building of relationships and friendships.
We will visit several areas of our local community, discovering a variety of learning opportunities to engage in with our children.
Our focus will be on the ‘talk’; through an encouraged curiosity for their environment children can extend their vocabulary and language, they can develop a confidence that will support their use of questions about the ‘how’, ‘why’ and ‘what’s’ of their journey, together we can reflect and consider the possible answers.
Outdoors is a language rich environment and we would like you to be a part of our walking and talking journey of literacy learning through exploring the wonders of our local community.
Look forward to seeing you then.
Big chef little chef
Big Chef, Little Chef family cooking programme was delivered in the centre by Jen Dawson, CLD Homelink Worker and was funded by the Family Learning Centre.
The programme ran for three weeks from Friday 1st – 18th May.
A total of 10 families participated over the 3 sessions.
Much fun was had as families learned new recipes, tried new foods and developed new skills throughout the programme. Our little chef’s loved squeezing their own orange juice and using a spiralizer to make courgette spaghetti hair!
Over the 3 weeks we made:
Healthy cheese & salad wrap / Fresh fruit salad
Vegetable kebabs / Apple crumble
Mini Happy Face Pizzas / Fruit kebabs
“I loved spending time with my son , doing new things and him trying new foods that he has never have put in his mouth before.”
“I enjoy spending fun time with my son, watching him learn new skills. He doesn’t usually want to try new foods but he did today.”
“I enjoyed going things with my daughter one-to-one. She listened was careful and we talked whilst preparing the food. She enjoyed every minute of the class, chopping and trying every piece of food.
“Really enjoy coming to the classes, getting to meet and talk with other parents and spending time with my son.”
“Creating faces for pizza. He had lots of fun doing this. So nice to see him smile and laugh while following instructions.
“I have enjoyed everything- how well my child has developed in her confidence. Well Done!”
“Enjoyed the 1-1 time. Enjoyed trying new food, and making cookery fun!
Every movement counts
Active children are healthy, happy, school ready and sleep better. Physical activity for early years
- Builds relationships and social skills
- Maintains health and weight gain
- Contributes to brain development and learning
- Improves sleep
- Develops muscles and bones
- encourages movement and co-ordination
Every Movement Counts, you should aim for at least 3 hours across every day. Move more. Sit less. Play together
Last week we observed an increase in children’s development and movement skills through all aspects of their play and learning. I am sure you will agree that the added bonus of the sunnier weather has encouraged your child to be more active at home. Thank you to everyone who has ensured that their children arrive for their session protected from the sun, by applying sun scream and bringing a hat.
The Play on Pedals Family Sessions have once more being a resounding success whereby we have an almost 97% uptake of family participation. There is certainly a buzz surrounding our new cyclists. Please feel free to bring your child’s own pedal bike and helmet to the nursery where they can continue to practise their skills. Watch this space for the photographs to be uploaded.
The final numbers are now in for the Summer Outing and the coaches have now being priced. It is £8.50 per adult and child for a seat on the coach. Many families have chosen to take their own transport and pay their own entrance fee, if you have chosen to do this please advise Lorraine in the admin office.
We are closed for Public Holiday on Friday 25th and Monday 28th May 2018. Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Nurturing Nature Forest School week 2
The children’s curiosity never fails to amaze practitioners when at Shotts Nature Park. Nature is such a wonderful learning tool which is sometimes in today’s technology driven environment forgotten. Children themselves can be observed leading their own learning, risk assessing their play and above all working together whilst learning through real life comtexutised play.
We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful resource on our door step in the heart of the community. Why not take a walk and explore the area as a family.
