Celebrating Bookbug’s birthday from Shotts Family Learning Centre

Each year we recognise the younger children’s achievements from throughout their first year at nursery.  Usually this is done with the help of a very important character ‘Bookbug’. This year is going to be a little bit different as we can’t come together for this fabulous celebration but what we can do is share all our fantastic memories of your little learners.  With a lot of fun and laughter they have made so much progress in making friends, building relationships and learning new skills.  As today is Bookbug’s ’10th’ birthday we thought what a great way to mark his special day.  Sit back and enjoy the show.

Bookbug Family sessions with Story Massage

We hope that you will be able to join us in an extra special Bookbug session with a twist. Where we will be able to demonstrate how stories and rhymes can be shared alongside the power of positive touch.

If due to work commitments you are unable to attend, why not ask another family member, gran, papa, aunt or uncle everyone is welcome to share in our learning. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Wow what a quick term…..

We cannot believe how quickly this term has flown by and the learning which has taken place. Each day the children have added something new to their learning. We have found that it’s so much quicker to share your child learning daily on TWITTER, please follow us on @CentreShotts.

Loose parts have inspired many of the children to be creative, to work cooperatively and share their learning with others.

Many of the children have taken part in weekly Langueland sessions facilitated by Isabel.  These groups are specifically designed to support the children’s attention and listening skills.  If you would like to find out more about these sessions then please speak to Isabel direct.

Its lovely to observe so many children who want to take their learning into the kitchen to bake and cook.  These are life long skills which will continue with them as they grown and develop.

Bookbug Rhyme Time sessions

What a fabulous support we had at the recent launch of this terms Bookbug Rhyme Time, it was lovely to have colleagues from health and CLD to join us.

Every Wednesday morning the group will take place for you and your child from 9 am until 9.15 am with Susan and Amanda, where Bookbug will then issue you will a lovely rhyme bag to share at home with your child until the following session.

In the room we shall be incorporating the rhyme Humpty Dumpty, into the children’s play, we hope that you will help them hear it at home too.

Top Tip from Gemma speech and language therapist

Extend vocabulary – give lots of repetition of words and offer choices to increase vocabulary e.g. ” apple or banana”. Speak in a lively, animated voice to highlight new words to your child.

Bookbug what a giggle………..

Over the course of the week the children have celebrated Bookbug Big Giggle week by taking part in various reading opportunities in and around their local community.  Parents also took the opportunity to join in the children’s 3 Read to Nurturing Early Readers group, before setting of with their child to the local library.

The story which gave the some of the children the biggest giggle was The Dinosaur that pooped a planet by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Pointer.

We welcomed senior pupils from Calderhead High School and pupils from Dykehead Primary School who spent time reading with the children in the nursery.  It was lovely to see the Primary 6 pupils most of whom had attended the nursery in the past and were able to confidently share their experience of being a nursery child.  The pupils were a credit to the school, who will all make excellent buddies to our children leaving in June.

Residents from Rosehall Care Home enjoyed their visit from Bookbug too, where the children shared a few of their favourite stories.

We hope that Bookbug Big Giggle has demonstrated that books can be enjoyed anywhere at anytime.
