Our Learning for the month of December

As a lot of our children prepare for the upcoming festivities they have been using their fine motor skills in a variety of forms to creatively make cards and gifts to give to the special people in their families, I’m sure you will be delighted with their creations!  These opportunities are allowing them to develop their hand-eye coordination and grip control which are fundamental to early writing skills.

With the excitement of Christmas in mind, most of our children are becoming more and more skilled at recognising their mood and feelings and are taking the opportunity to visit our mindful room when they feel they need a change in pace, relaxation or simply some quiet time.

Within the Rainbow Room our children have been developing their emerging literacy and numeracy skills with a range of experiences from cooking pizza, cookies and macaroni cheese where they have had to measure and determine volume.

They also have chosen to mark make in the sand and small note pads or indeed Christmas cards, using their creativity to compile list for Santa or shopping.

Some of our children have also began transitioning to our other playroom, where they are building relationships in a nurturing environment.

Our Book Week Scotland celebrations came to a finale today, we are very grateful for all the help we have had over the course of the week to allow for all our experiences to take place.

This morning we were able to return to both the Library and the Gruffalo trail, thanks to lots of special people helping us.  As well as Gemma, Oskar and Alan joining us from Calderhead High School to share some stories and join us in our play.

In the afternoon Natalie came to visit us to tell the story of ‘We’re Going on a BearHunt’ in a whole new way.

Children returned to nursery today keen to bring their literacy skills to life once again, through explorations of the local community.  We had return visits to the nature park and library, as well as taking our enthusiasm to our local care home where the children were taking turns to both talk and listen to the residents, sharing stories.

Tomorrow is our last day of Book Week Scotland and we are planning to welcome pupils from Caldrerhead High School, including Oscar, Alan, Graeme and Gemma, into the playroom to share their literacy skills through story-telling.  We are also excited to have Natalie joining us in the afternoon to bring stories to life through Gymnastics, so please ensure your children are wearing comfortable clothing.

Scottish Book Week – Day 2

The enthusiasm for Book Week Scotland continued today as the children excitedly made their choices of where they were going to take their learning today.

Along with some brave parent helpers some groups of children got wrapped up warm to go on their Gruffalo trail, by looking out for, reading and solving the clues, both morning and afternoon children successfully located the Gruffalo.  I wonder if we will have the same success tomorrow!

Meanwhile in the playroom, we were learning through books in all areas, whether making cakes after listening to the story ‘Katie’s Pairty’ or creating our own stories from our imagination.  We also welcomed a keen parent helper from the local community into the story corner to share her valuable expertise in story telling and rhyme.

Due to popular demand we revisited both the library and Story Yoga and massage from yesterday and it looks like this pattern will continue all week.

Our Book Week Celebrations Have Begun

Book Week Scotland has got off to a flying start in the nursery!  The children responded very well to the staff and pupils of Dykehead Primary School, quickly forming relationships and listening attentively to the stories they had brought with them.

Whilst others participated in Story Yoga, learning new movements to go alongside the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ before finishing off with a massage to the rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

Thanks to some of our parents we were able to have an outing to the local library where a group of children got to borrow a book of their choice, please speak to your child’s key worker if you would also like to join us in our celebrations!

The shelves in our Book Swap Shop are filling up, so if any of your family have any old books they would like to trade in please bring them along and you can exchange them for  a new exciting read.
