A huge thank you to all the parents who contributed to the consultation on the Emerging Literacy Home Link Resource for your and your child. And to all the parents who are keeping to the allocated drop off and collecting times for their children, it really is helping to keep you children safe and to ensure that practitioners have time to fully resource the learning and teaching areas.

Welcome to the beginning of a new term

We hope that you all have had a lovey summer holiday and managed to get some sunshine no matter where you were.

Remember this session all the children will be issued with their own nursery bag to keep their personal belongings.  Each bag is labelled clearly with a picture of each child making it easier for them to identify.

Due to the reduced caretaking/ cleaning hours allocated to the centre, in the interest of safety and security the main doors will not be opened until 8.40 am or 9 am then again at 1 pm.  We would ask that you do not arrive prior to these times as it may result in you and your child waiting outdoors in incremental weather.

The centre would like to welcome Mairi Byrne and Yvonne McGirth who has joined the staff team as Additional Support Needs Assistants, Mairi will be contracted to 25 hrs and Yvonne 35 hrs.  Early learning practitioner Shannon Brown will be returning two afternoons per week with Amy McIntyre working five afternoons.

The Newsletter is both available as an attachment and on a paper copy from your child’s key worker.

Curious twos

The children in the Rainbow Room curiosity skills are continuously being developed through the skilful interaction of the practitioners. The rainy weather has provided endless opportunities as they watch the flow, fill their buckets and splash as loudly as they can watching the bubbles form.

The weekly parent and child Forest School sessions have been a resounding success. On the recent visit they caught some tadpoles and are fascinated watching them shed their tails as they grow.

They have been searching for insects, beasties and bugs and were in awe when they set the butterflies free.

Early Level Transition with Dykehead Primary School

Transitions for children can at times be traumatic if they are not handled and planned for carefully. However, the recent transition sessions for children and families between the centre and Dykehead Primary School have been excellent this year.

To finish the series of events the children invited all of their buddies to join with them in a nurturing nature event at Shotts Nature Park.  Their were 32 preschool children joined by 40 Primary 6 pupils from Dykehead Primary, who all behaved exemplary.  Together they took take part in bug hunts, creating fairy doors, story telling, bark rubbing, blind trails and fairy crowns.

Learning together in the the Rainbow Room

Outdoor learning has provided the children with so many opportunities to develop their curiosity skills.  They have been in awe of the tiny tadpoles found in the pond and surprised how easy it was to blow the dandelions.

The story of the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, provided the children with opportunities to develop their early numeracy skills as they counted out how many pieces of fruit and foods he munched through before turning into a butterfly.  They are now following the life of the caterpillar as it turns into a butterfly.  Why not ask your little one to show you where they are kept in the playroom.

The enjoyment of stories cannot be underestimated.  Here the children are able to share their story via a photograph album of their time at the Nature Park and spend quality time with the support of an adult as they share a story together.

Wow, working together as they use lots of open ended resources to problem solve.

Learning outdoors

The children in the Rainbow Room have been utilising the outdoor learning environments to deepen their curiosity and creativity skills. From finding the creepiest of crawlies under the stones to watching the “wee” tadpoles with wonder in the dipping pond within Shotts Nature Park and then wow they found the real Humpty Dumpty’s wall.

They have been learning how to care for their strawberry patch by ensuring that the plants are given water daily, before setting off into the mud kitchen to create some wonderful new recepies.

The children are demonstrating increasing skill on the balance bikes and are choosing daily to access this resource. Watch out for the next post to see their first Play on Pedals Family Learning session.
