School’s out for Summer…

Well Primary 5/4 it is now officially our school summer holidays…

As I said earlier in the week, it is strange ending our year this way but thank you for being a great class and for adapting to learning this way for the past few months. A big thank you should also go to your parents too for helping you!

I hope you all have a great break away from learning and I look forward to seeing you all back at Ladywell in August! Check your emails later on today for a little parting gift!

Remember you can still keep in touch with me via email (lgirvan@glow.sch.uk), on twitter (@MissGirvan) or via our class Team during the Summer break.

Take care, stay safe and I will see you all soon!

love, Miss Girvan. x

Reflection…

As this is our last week as a class, I would like you to spend a little time reflecting on our year together…

Use these blether questions to chat with someone at home…

End of Year-Reflection-Blether Questions

…if memories pop into your head that you think I would like to hear then please share them with me via email (lgirvan@glow.sch.uk) I am sure that hearing these will brighten my day!

Although it was cut short I would also like for you to think about your year in school. Think about all you have learnt, activities you have completed and achievements you have accomplished to complete the following activity…

End-of-Year-Reflection-Activity

Lastly, over the next few days I will send you a personalised word cloud made with words that I think sum you up as a little parting gift from me to you! I will email this to both you and your parents. In return, if you would like to, you can send me back a word which you think sums me up! Remember to be thoughtful in your response…

I look forward to hearing any memories you have of our year together!

Keep an eye on our school Twitter (clicking on the following tags will take you directly to both Active Schools and our Twitter profiles) @LadywellPrimary for more information and @NLActiveSchools who will be releasing videos on social media of their mascot Archie the Activator doing some of the activities to give you an idea. This will happen throughout the week. Any activities you take part in be sure to send tag our school, Active Schools and myself in videos or pictures and include the hashtag #NLSportsDay.

Here’s some information of how the day will look…

10am – A short warm up video from some local clubs will be posted on twitter to start off the day (this can be viewed at any time).

10.30am – 1.30pm – Chance for everyone to try the events… Send and tag our school in your pictures and videos onto twitter with the hashtag #NLSportsDay

1.30pm – Bronze, Silver & Gold Results will be released on @NLActiveSchools Twitter account. All participants can see how well they did (there will be a p1-3, p4-7 and S1 plus). Parents, guardians and siblings can get involved too!

Our last week…

Well Primary 5/4…

I can’t quite believe that we’ve come to our final week of term & the final few days as a class…

I can honestly say you’ve been a great class to have & it has been a pleasure to be your teacher this year!

I must admit that it makes me quite emotional to send you off for summer this way but I look forward to seeing you all back at Ladywell next session and seeing your happy faces again!

Although this summer holiday will be different to those you usually have I hope you have a great break from learning and spend time with your families doing the things you enjoy!

I would still love to hear from you during this time so please keep in touch via Email, our class Team or send me a message on Twitter (@MissGirvan)

Happy holidays Primary 5/4 – love, Miss Girvan. x

Rainbow Learning – Week Eight…

Last week we looked at the colour pink and how it made the you feel…

Pink is traditionally associated with love, hearts and flowers. Some of the paintings in Pablo Picasso’s Rose Period help to convey those expressions of love. Here are some images of his work during this period – https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Flower+Picasso+Rose+Period&FORM=IRBPRS&=0.

You might enjoy finding out a little bit more about Pablo Picasso and the different styles of his work. This clip will help you get started – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6brwmn

You would maybe enjoy creating your own Picasso styled painting from the Rose Period. You might want to style this on a portrait, a flower or even a heart. For examples of how to do this, these clips might help – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iKmH84hoZo or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auWrjhpppmc

Over the last few weeks, you may have been spending a lot more time outdoors and may have been using lots of natural resources. ‘The 13 Story Treehouse’ is a book you may wish to read over the summer or listen to it being read in the following clips – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeVjrDd9fUMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufLbi6Ynxno , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LjYm-Gnt5s , and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxtecn0qtzM

You could design your very own 13 Story Treehouse and then attempt to make a model of this with as many natural resources you can find. Will it have a see-through swimming pool, a lemonade fountain or even a marshmallow machine? Let your imaginations run wild and see what you can come up with! Don’t forget to post pictures of your creations!

toasted marshmallows

Time now for a challenge! All this designing is hungry work!

Why don’t you attempt to make a solar oven to toast marshmallows!

All you need is a box, a poli-pocket or clingfilm and some kitchen foil – oh and don’t forget the marshmallows and chocolate! And the sun…

These websites might help with some ideas – https://desertchica.com/diy-solar-oven-smores-kids-science-experiment/ or  https://sciencing.com/solar-powered-oven-kids-4797415.html

For some fun facts about the sun and solar energy, listen to this clip – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgwxfg8/articles/z6w8jhv

Why not finish the week with some Rainbow Fudge? Here’s a recipe which you might like – https://www.booktrust.org.uk/globalassets/resources/blogs/2019/nadiya-holi-rainbow-fudge.pdf

Enjoy!

Maths – Sumdog…

During last week’s Sumdog we placed 201st out of 765 classes with 3279 correct answers! A superb effort Primary 5/4 – well done to all of you who took part.

A second contest ran by North Lanarkshire started on Friday 12th and will run until Thursday 18th.

All you need to do is login and play to contribute towards our school’s place on the leaderboard! We need 10 players to qualify for the competition, right now 4 of you have played, so please try to get online!

As a reward for taking part in the competition, students who answer 100 questions will also receive an item for their Sumdog House! I will also receive a special report showing how hard you have worked during the contest – this may mean that I also reward coins!

I will also continue to reward those, who at the end of the week, have spent the most time online and those who score the highest…

Good luck in the contest – let’s make sure we help Ladywell get onto the Leaderboard!

Spelling – Prefixes – WB. 15/6…

For spelling this week, I would like you to spend time reading & spelling prefix words…

Prefixes are groups of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the start – for example: un + happy = unhappy.

Most mean a similar thing when they’re added to different words.

Use these posters to remind you of the suffix rules…

Prefix Posters

You can also recap/learn more about prefixes at this BBC Bitesize link or these series of lessons from BBC Teach

Then practise the suffix words below and continue to use the new spelling activities…

Prefix Word List

Spelling-Activities-Menu

You could also search for some prefix quizzes on Kahoot! for a further challenge…

This week…

Good morning everyone!
I can’t believe we’ve now reached our last full week of you being in P5/4!
Although this is not how we would normally spend our last full week of the school year together I want to thank you for being so adaptable during this time!
This week would have been our Sports Day – I am sure that many of you will be disappointed that this can not go ahead.
However, this week, Team Ladywell will be hosting our first ‘Virtual Sports Week’ in time for North Lanarkshire’s Virtual Sports Day on Monday 22nd of June (part of National School Sports Week 2020).
So how can you get involved…
The table below covers the Sports aspect and all the information on it should answer any questions you may have.
This will be a school house competition. Each day you will let Mrs. Carton know your times in the events you choose to participate in via the email address given on the above table. Send her your results along with your name, stage (P5 or P4) and house.
Mrs. Carton will then award points to find a winning house each day!
The announcement of this will probably run a couple of days behind to allow for all results to come in…
Even if only one pupil participates that day then their house wins!
I have included below a list of the school houses and which house you are part of incase you have forgotten…
Another whole school task being set by Mrs. Carton is to make a personal/family/house/Ladywell banner or flag to cheer themselves or others on.
Be sure to look out for more information relating to all of this on our school Twitter, class Team and here on our blog!
Finally, another task I would like for you to complete this week involves us reflecting on the school year, celebrating achievements and getting ready for transitions…
Use this PowerPoint/PDF first to stop, think and discuss with someone at home all that you have achieved this year…
Then, you can complete the activities below which link with the above!
Remember to send these to me – as I would love to read them! – & take and share lots of photos of you competing in our Virtual Sports Day!
Have fun!!
Miss Girvan.
