Art work

As part of our ‘Travel and Transport’ topic we have been learning about different modes of transport. We decided to focus on boats for a piece of art work. Primary 3 are now going to tell you all about how we completed our pictures.

First we looked at different paintings of boats and talked about what we liked in each picture. We had to use some ideas from these paintings to create our own boat journey picture. We used light blue paint to paint half of the piece of paper. To make the clouds we used a sponge dabbed in white paint. Next we painted the bottom of the picture green and had to wait patiently for it to dry! When it was dry we painted dark blue over the top of it. When it was still a little wet we used a fork to make patterns which looked like waves. We thought this was the most fun part! While the paint was drying off, we designed and decorated two sailing boats. Lastly we glued the boats onto the picture. We all really enjoyed this art activity and think the end result looks marvellous!

Blitz Collage

As part of their WWII topic Primary 6 and 7 created Blitz pictures which they were very proud of.  The P7 children also wrote about it in their e-profile.  Here is Hayley’s ‘blog’.

In my class we started our new topic ~ WWII. Mrs. Muir told us all  about the Clyde Bank Blitz and the ones in London. For art we made a collage. It started with creating a wash for the background of the sky using  yellow, red and orange water colour paints. We lightly brushed yellow paint on the bottom portion of the paper and then we moved onto the orange, making both colours mix together. At the top we painted it red. Next we took a long piece of black paper and with our pencils we made a simple silhouette of a skyline. With the piece we cut out, we stuck it to the bottom of the paper we made a wash on. We saved the excess piece of paper that we got from the skyline. Next we used the same technique to make a skyline but this time it was on beige paper. We did the same and cut it out and with the excess piece of paper we gave it to our partners so they could use it. The next step was to cut out the beige paper skyline and put glue on the bottom of it. We had to slot it behind the first piece of black paper. The excess from the cutting of the black paper was put up a certain way to make it look like another skyline. This was slotted behind the beige paper and now we had a bigger skyline that had contrasts of beige and black. We used yellow tissue paper to create searchlights by folding it into a cone shape which we then stuck onto the skyline. Now we used some black paper to cut out a plane that acted like a Luftwaffe. We also could cut out some bombs for them to drop. When we finished our pictures were mounted on black paper and this made them look more effective. I enjoyed doing this piece of work because not only did we learn how to make a collage and a wash we learned about the Blitz.

Robinwood – The Challenge!!!

Primary 6 and 7 pupils rose to the challenge when they attended Robinwood Outdoor Centre for 3 days in the chilly month of January.  When they reached Alston in Cumbria they were faced with a two and a half mile Moorland Walk to reach the centre itself – no mean feat when we had to deal with wind, rain, hail, snow and sunshine!!! There followed 3 days of activities from Dragon Quest problem solving to Zipwire, Archery to the Piranha Pool!  Children were encouraged to take part in all activities – as were staff!!  Noone was forced to participate but instead each child was helped to challenge themselves and take one more step, or climb one foot higher so as to achieve their personal challenge. All children ate well in the dining room storing up energy for the next task!  Meals were enjoyed by all!  All children were very well behaved and Robinwood staff were very complimentary about their attitude to tasks, politeness and behaviour – well done everyone!!  Night staff were very impressed by their cooperation and ability to settle to sleep quickly – no names appeared in ‘the book’!!  When we left dorms were spotless – especially the boys’ rooms!  We returned home tired but exhilarated, glad to see our family and sleep in our own beds!  All the children expressed the opinion that a chance to go to Robinwood should never be missed!!

The Titanic Lives On!

Whilst Primary 6 are having a ball with Mrs Muir learning all about World War 2, Primary 5 have been enjoying their new topic The Titanic.

We have been investigating who really was to blame for the sinking and have been learning all about the different passengers aboard.

The children have also explored the different rooms on the Titanic and accepted the challenge to make their own version. Here is how it turned out.

Our Fabulous time at Robinwood!

Primary 6 and 7 had a wonderful time at Robinwood. We have all learned some new skills and I think it is fair to say we have faced a lot of our fears on this trip!  We even managed to survive the piranha pool.

Here are some of our photos.

We are all going on an outing!

The children in Primary 4/3 are going on an Educational Outing tomorrow to the Riverside Museum as part of their Interdisciplinary Theme on Transport.  They will have lunch there and return to school for approximately 2.00pm.

When they left school today they were looking forward to seeing all the different types of transport on display.

We hope the snow stays aways and they enjoy their outing with their class teacher Mrs Johnstone.
