Health Week March 2015

Health Week is now in full flow at Overtown Primary. The children thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Inflatable Fitness’ session on Monday and P4-7 participated well in their taster session of handball this afternoon.

Please have a look through some photographs to see P5/4 and Mrs Johnstone’s Primary 4’s in action during their sessions. You can tell from the smiling faces that they are having great fun!

Comic Relief

The boys and girls in Primary 4/3 have all paid £1 to dress down to school today to raise money for Comic Relief. Some children have enjoyed making their faces ‘funny’ too! We hope lots of money is raised for Comic Relief.DSCN0127[1]

Titanic Visit

Primary 5’s for P6/5 were lucky enough to get a visit from Sean from the Titanic Honour and Glory Outreach Programme.  The children were thrilled to see Sean arrive in his uniform. The visit gave us an opportunity to react different parts of the Titanic story, from it being built to the sinking. The children really enjoyed dressing up and acting out parts of the story and well as designing their own White Star Line dinner plates. Sean was delighted at how enthusiastic and polite the children were. The workshop really helped bring the story to life!

David Livingstone Centre

003

Today Primary 5/4 went on a visit to the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre. Here, they participated in a guided tour around the museum and experienced an African objects handling session. They had an excellent time and discovered even more facts about David Livingstone.

The guide said he was amazed by the prior knowledge of the children. They were also complimented on their behaviour throughout the trip. Well done Primary 5/4.

Here are some of their comments about the trip:

Ziad: “I really enjoyed going to the David Livingstone Centre because they taught me stuff that I didn’t know. For example, the tools David Livingstone used to navigate around Africa were extremely big.”

Isla: “I enjoyed going in the dark room because I knew lots of the answers and the guide said he could leave us in charge of the tour. P4 rule!”

Jennifer: “I liked the David Livingstone Centre because we got to have a closer look at all of the stuff that he used.”

Jake: “I liked the David Livingstone Centre because they showed us skin made into blankets.”

Grace: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because we got to experience handling real African objects.”

Jodi: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre. My favourite part was being in the dark room because all the scenes that happened in David Livingstone’s life lit up and we got to hear the story.”

Zara: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because I got to see real African objects. This will be an experience that I’ll remember forever.”

Karen: “I really enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because we got a tour of Shuttle Row and we got to see some different artefacts from Africa. It was very fun and a good experience.”

Marie: “We all enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre and we hope to go back to it.”

Emma M: “I liked the David Livingstone Centre because I enjoyed listening to Phyllis when she told the story about a journalist who put back together a newspaper article which David Livingstone had written on.”

Drew: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because I learned a little more about David Livingstone and what life in Africa would have been like.”

Lauren: “I really enjoyed seeing the different artefacts from David Livingstone’s life. I enjoyed learning about David Livingstone’s son, Robert, and how he didn’t like school and used to run away! He was eventually found in America with a new identity but carrying a photograph of himself.”

Craig: “I really enjoyed going round the tour of Shuttle Row and I wasn’t scared of the statues.”

Emma T: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because in the dark room I learned that David Livingstone’s helpers built a straw house for him when he was ill. David Livingstone was found praying at his bed when he passed away.”

Ryan: “I enjoyed going into David Livingstone’s house.”

Kyle: “I enjoyed the David Livingstone Centre because I saw a big massive lion statue and cool African hunting weapons.”

Chloe: “I enjoyed learning some things about David Livingstone. For example, Henry Stanley came to Africa to find David Livingstone to write a report on him.”

Morgan: “I really enjoyed our trip to the David Livingstone Centre. It was really fun because we got to go in to David Livingstone’s real house. I wouldn’t like to live there.”

Orienteering

P4 and P6 have had fun this week in the playground developing their orienteering skills. P6’s led the session to teach the p4’s the different activities they know. We were learning how to read a map and we even had time for a game of hide and seek!

World Book Day

Primary 5/4 enjoyed listening to “The Twits” by Roald Dahl yesterday morning. We all discussed our favourite parts of this hilarious story.

The next activity for both primary 6/5 and 5/4 was to collaboratively create a character. We split our page into four sections. In the first section we drew a head. We then folded the paper to hide this and passed it on to the next person to draw a body and so on until our characters were complete. We loved the ‘big reveal’ when we got to see our completed characters – they were really funny.

We then wrote character descriptions for our characters. Please read some examples below:

006

My character is called Barbie. She has a Barbie doll head and a square body. She wears wiggly trousers and has dinosaur feet! Barbie is a kind and helpful character. She always helps people. I would not like to meet my character though because she has dinosaur feet and might stand on my feet!

003

My character’s name is Sargent Flipper. She is an army girl with flippers as feet. She can take off her flippers and add feet when she wants to. She has a missing part from the bottom of her top to her legs.

Sargent Flipper is a strict character. She will help you all of the time, no matter how weird or girly it is. She likes playing basketball and football. She is also very good at swimming.

I would like to meet Sargent Flipper because she could go swimming, play basketball and football with me.

001

My character is called Fiyito. He has a dark face, square body, springs for legs and wears four flip flops. Nobody knows what kind of character he is because of his face being missing. He is very mysterious.

I’m not sure that I would like to meet him. He hides in shadows and might be dangerous!

007

My character is called Miss Crevil. She has big eyes that would hypnotise you. She has a long, sharp nose and wears a big pony tail that always goes to the right. She has sharp, evil teeth. She looks very strong and wears a shirt. She has three long legs and wears knee high socks with little shoes.

My character is crazy and evil. She is a dentist but the nastiest dentist you could meet. She isn’t a good person to talk to or make friends with – she won’t share anything.

I would not like to meet my character because she is not a good dentist, is evil and crazy.

World Book Day

Today was ‘World Book Day’ so the boys and girls from Primary 4/3 brought in their favourite book to discuss in class. The children enjoyed listening to each other talk about why the book was their favourite and what happened in the story. Mrs Johnstone read ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson to the class. The boys and girls then made some stick puppets of both the snail and the whale characters to allow them to re-tell the story in pairs. They looked fantastic and the children had lots of fun as you can see from the pictures!

Fairtrade Fortnight continues!

Fairtrade fortnight has continued in Overtown Primary this week with out breakfast clubs, Fairtrade tuck shop and smoothies. The children (and staff) seem to have been enjoying  having different snacks.  Both the Health and Eco teams have been working hard to ensure that Fairtrade Fortnight is a success. Here are some photos!

The Tallship

The P5’s from P6/5 visited The Tallship and Transport Musuem yesterday and had an amazing time.

The pupils began by taking part in a workshop where they had the opportunity to become marine archaelologists. The class split into teams and ‘excavated’ replica Titanic artefacts. They had to remember where the objects were uncovered and the positions had to be logged. I think it is fair to say the children found this really exciting.  They then had to use primary and secondary sources to determine which objects were used by 1st class, 2nd class and crew.

Afterwards, we had the opportunity to have a tour of the Glenlee. The pupils had fun ringing the bell, scrubbing the deck and exploring the Captains cabin.

We were also lucky enough to visit the transport museum where we were able to have a look at lots of model ships, amongst other things. Unfortunately we never found the Titanic!

Here are some of our favourite parts of the day –

Heather –  I really liked the transport museum, especially the model street.

Reece – I liked looking at the different rooms people have to stay in on the ship.

Elise – I liked taking part in some of the jobs aboard the ship like sending rice up to the top deck.

Kristian – I loved excavating the artefacts from the sand. I would love to be an archaeologist when I am older!100_2266 100_2267 100_2268 100_2269 100_2276 100_2277 100_2278 100_2279 100_2280 100_2281 100_2282 100_2283 100_2285 100_2286 100_2287 100_2289 100_2291 100_2294 100_2297 100_2298 100_2302 100_2303 100_2305 100_2308 100_2309 100_2314 100_2315 100_2324 100_2327 100_2328 100_2329
