David Livingstone’s Magic Lantern

images[9]

Primary Five/Four learned that David Livingstone had two important things to help him tell the African people about God – a Bible and a magic lantern. The magic lantern was an old-fashioned slide projector which David used to show pictures from Bible stories.

The children decided that they would like to create their own magic lantern slides of a well known Bible story. Initially they designed their slides on paper. These were then photocopied onto acetate. Each child used their slides to share a Bible story with their peers.

P5 Science Week

Primary five have been busy learning all about electricity this week. First, they learned how electricity is generated in power stations. They then went on to learn about electrical circuits and the standard symbols which electricians all around the world use to design and create circuits. They particularly enjoyed creating their own circuits using a range of components.  Finally, they learned how batteries work. They worked in groups to create a poster which explains how a battery works and then presented this to the class. All children participated well and spoke with confidence to their peers about their new learning.

Please take a look at the photos from their presentations today and read some  comments from the children about their learning during Science Week:

Morgan S – In Science I learned that there are three parts to a battery; cathode, anode and the electrolyte.

Zara – I learned what goes on inside a battery and about the different parts of one.

Emma T – I enjoyed making my own circuit.

Kyle St – I learned how a battery works. It was fascinating finding out about the different parts.

A-Jay – I learned how batteries work.

Morgan H – I enjoyed learning about how a battery works. I had no clue about it before today.

Kristian – I enjoyed working in a group to create a poster about how a battery works.

Thomas P – I had fun making circuits.

Reece – I learned all about how a battery works and that it has three sections; the anode, electrolyte and cathode.

Matthew – I learned that there are electrons in batteries.

Elise – I did not know there are three layers in a battery. I enjoyed making a presentation about it.

Heather – I knew very little about electricity before Science Week. Now I know loads about electricity and batteries.

Clare – I learned that electricity is an energy source and realised that I hadn’t really thought about how a battery works or my electronics work.

Aaron – I learned that electricity can be made by burning rubbish or gas. It can also be made using solar panels.

Jamie – In Science I learned about a battery and what goes on inside them. I super enjoyed it and I wish I could do the subject again.

Grace – I really enjoyed learning about electricity and batteries.

Ziad – I really enjoyed Science Week because we were learning about complicated electricity but now it’s easy.

P2 Science Week

P2 have been learning all about sounds and vibrations this  science week with Miss Potts. They have been participating in numerous experiments to find out what factors can influence the sounds that we hear and to find out how sounds are made.

I have had lots of fun working with P2 and hope they have too!

P6/5 Health Week

P6/5  had an amazing time during health week.

The children enjoyed the handball, basketball, scooter fitness and inflatable fitness. Although, I think inflatable fitness was the favourite.  Here are some of our photos.

Primary 4 Science

It’s ‘Science Week’ in Overtown Primary this week! Primary 4 children had a good discussion about forces yesterday which led on to them learning about air resistance. The boys and girls enjoyed an outdoor activity where they had to run around on their own first, then run holding a piece of A4 paper and lastly holding a large piece of card in front of them. The children confidently spoke about how difficult it was to run with the piece of card in front of them, compared to when they had nothing in their hands, as there was more air resistance when they held the card in front. We watched a couple of video clips of cyclists competing in the team pursuit event at the Olympic games. The children were amazed to learn how helmets, bikes  and clothing are designed to allow the cyclist to move through the air quickly. The children are looking forward to the rest of ‘Science Week’ and the fun activities planned. Here is a short video clip and some photographs of our outdoor activity yesterday.

Scooter Fitness 20/03/2015

Today the whole school experienced a ‘Scooter Fitness’ session. This was hugely popular with the pupils. They enjoyed the various games and challenges that the Micro-Fitness coaches had planned for them. It was a great way to end to our Health Week activities!  Here are some photos of Primary 5/4 in action!

Solar Eclipse

The boys and girls from Primary 5/4 and Primary 4/3 were extremely excited to watch live footage of the solar eclipse this morning.  The children knew lots of details about what was happening and could confidently talk about the different stages of the eclipse while it was happening. It was amazing to see how dark the sky was becoming. Hopefully the children will remember this moment for years to come!

Health Week – Basketball

As part of Health Week Primary 4/3 thoroughly enjoyed a basketball session this morning . The children enjoyed throwing and catching the ball and learning some new tricks. The boys and girls played lots of different games which helped them when dribbling the ball. They were also reminded to keep their head up, like they would do in a real game. They are hoping to play some basketball again soon. Here are some of their comments followed by pictures from this morning.

Christopher – “I thought the basketball session was awesome!”

Kian – “I had a fabulous time learning new basketball skills.”

Cyra-Lee – “I liked playing basketball.”

Kaila – “I enjoyed bouncing the ball.”

Alex – “It was very difficult but still fun.”

Ethan – “I thought it was very good because I liked bouncing the ball and playing tig with it.”

Adam – “I thought the basketball session was fun because I could do some of the tricks.”

Health Week – Tai Chi

This afternoon Primary 3 were lucky enough to have a taster session in Tai Chi as part of our school ‘Health Week.’ The boys and girls learned from Alison that Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art which has lots of health benefits to a person who is participating. The children enjoyed the  slow, precise movements and the quiet time they had at the end to think or reflect. Afterwards, the boys and girls returned to class feeling very relaxed…..and quiet!! Here are some pictures below of our taster session.
