P7/6 Science Investigation – Chemical Reactions

P7/6 carried out a science investigation to see if they could propell a film container into the air to simulate a rocket launch.  After much discussion they used a film canister, Vitamin C tablet and 3 different liquids – water, vinegar and a fizzy drink (this was the variable they changed each time). Each child made a hypothesis and predicted what they thought would happen. They worked in small groups and each had a role to play.  They had great fun with this experiment and were very responsible, thinking of the health and safety aspects of it.  Results were videoed on the i-Pad and children talked about their findings and recorded them in the form of graphs. As a class our results showed that the fizzy drink produced the biggest explosion. We found that the more acidic the substance the greater the chemical reaction.  Next stop NASA!!!

Bank Manager’s Visit

Primary 7/6 were lucky enough to have a visit from a ‘real live’ bank manager as part of their Money block!  They learned all about British and foreign currency, and even got to handle £50 and £100 notes – a first for the teacher too! They learned all about different bank accounts available, how important security is, and how to make the best of their money.  They took part in an interesting activity on ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ and budgeted for a holiday, making decisions where to stay, what to eat and where to go.  They were all very money conscious and stayed well within budget!  Parents take note!!!  At the end they had lots of questions to ask and were given a notebook and pen.  The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity and learned a lot.  Our thanks go to Mr Brock for giving up his time to come in and work with us.

WWII Tea Dance

Recently Primaries 7 and 6 held a very successful Tea Dance to bring to an end their study of WWII The Home Front.  It was attended by family and friends of the pupils and the school hall was fit to burst!  The children had all dressed up in the costume of the day and looked amazing!  They sang and acted their hearts out, dancing to some of the wartime tunes!  The audience loved the experience and were treated to tea and a spot of home baking (which they had donated!) after which they retired to the classroom to examine the children’s topic work and see the displays.  The ‘home’ baking and donations which were left were shared amongst the other children in school the next day – there were many happy smiling faces!  The school made a donation to the ‘Poppy Appeal’ on behalf of the parents who contributed to what was a very successful day!

Well done children!!!

SSPCA Visit

Today all stages participated in a session provided by the SSPCA on a range of topics. Primary Five/Four’s input was on ‘Wild about Animals’. They learned about endangered animals in Scotland and had a go at identifying some using picture clues which showed a snapshot of their habitat and markings. They also learned what to do if they ever see an animal in trouble and experienced using some of the rescue equipment.

Science Investigation – Cleaning Coins!

On Monday, Primary Five/Four enjoyed carrying out an investigation to determine the best solution to clean old 2p coins. We discussed the variables of the experiment and how we could ensure the experiment fair then wrote our hypothesis. The majority of the children predicted that fairy liquid would be the best cleaner. However, on carrying out the experiment, their findings were that sauces were actually the best solution to clean coins with – the spicier the better!

Caterpillars!

015 016

Day One

Primary five/four were very excited on Monday when five new additions joined the class in the form of tiny little caterpillars!

Since Monday, the class have enjoyed watching the caterpillars eat their food and explore their surroundings. They can’t believe how quickly they are growing! The children have read about taking care of the caterpillars and have learned about the different stages of them becoming a butterfly. We will keep you posted on their development!

029Day Three

Special thanks to Jan Devanny for arranging this experience for the children.

David Livingstone Memorial Plaques

Primary 5/4 brought their topic on David Livingstone to a close by designing, then creating a memorial plaque for him. They had to think carefully about their word choice to ensure they could fit their design on a plaque and express who David Livingstone was. Here are some photos of the class in action and a few of their finished plaques.
