P7/6 are gainfully employed creating pop-up books this term. They have been learning about Lanarkshire and the Clyde Valley and specifically about landmarks in the area. They have been doing a lot of research. They also learned how to make 6 different types of ‘folds’ to incorporate into their books – box fold, mouth fold, paper spring pop-up, lift-the-flap-pop-up, slider pop-up and rotating pop-up. The context for their pop-up books is that a ‘visitor’ has come to Scotland. They have to take their ‘character’ on a tour of Scotland visiting different landmarks, at least one of which must be in Lanarkshire!
They have organised themselves into ‘working’ groups, each of which must devise a storyboard outlining the landmarks to be used (more research), storyline, illustrations etc. But while doing this they are required to work cooperatively!! They need to think about talents of individual children, pool ideas, learn to compromise, allocate jobs, accept feedback, choose materials, etc. Not an easy task but one which will ensure children become successful, responsible, effective and confident!
By the end of term it is hoped that these pop-up books will be ready with a cover and blurb to read to the other classes in the school. Until then we are going to have some noisy and busy afternoons in class.
