Overtown Primary School

Primary 4 Science

It’s ‘Science Week’ in Overtown Primary this week! Primary 4 children had a good discussion about forces yesterday which led on to them learning about air resistance. The boys and girls enjoyed an outdoor activity where they had to run around on their own first, then run holding a piece of A4 paper and lastly holding a large piece of card in front of them. The children confidently spoke about how difficult it was to run with the piece of card in front of them, compared to when they had nothing in their hands, as there was more air resistance when they held the card in front. We watched a couple of video clips of cyclists competing in the team pursuit event at the Olympic games. The children were amazed to learn how helmets, bikes  and clothing are designed to allow the cyclist to move through the air quickly. The children are looking forward to the rest of ‘Science Week’ and the fun activities planned. Here is a short video clip and some photographs of our outdoor activity yesterday.
