The SQA has information for learners about the national qualifications. It also has useful advice on creating a study plan, as well as a video of exam top tips.
BBC Bitesize has links to learning and revision resources for National 5 and for Higher subjects. You can also login to personalise the site.
BrightRed Publishing has online resources and study support for SQA exams, including a digital zone, videos on Youtube and revision supplements.
Another publisher, Collins, has study skills and motivational advice.
If you are studying Shakespeare this session, take a look at myShakespeare.com/ . This site aims to make the plays of William Shakespeare easier to understand. Six dramas are currently covered: Julius Caesar, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet and Taming of the Shrew. There are summaries of each scene, as well as filmed scenes, “interviews” with characters, animations, audio recordings and notes on figures of speech.
If you have discursive essays or reports to write, take a look at the Academic Phrasebank from the University of Manchester. This website gives useful examples and tips for academic writing. Just remember that it is aimed at university students but you may find it helpful.
Don’t forget that the Library has a range of Nat 5 and Higher practice papers and revision books to help you. They are all available beside the issue desk and can be borrowed.
Planning to continues your studies after school?
Queen’s University Belfast offers a short online course in transition skills. Understand the difference in information literacy between school and university, and pay particular attention to the section about Wikipedia! The unit on plagiarism and referencing is also very useful.
UCAS has produced a series of study skills guides to help you successfully make the transition to higher education.
FutureLearn has a free online course on preparing for university. “Build the academic skills you need for learning at university and ease your transition from school learning to higher education”.
Another useful FutureLearn course is a beginner’s guide to writing in English for university study. “Learn how to use English for study at university or college and develop your writing skills, vocabulary and grammar.”
