Read to Succeed: S1 author visit

S1 pupils were highly entertained and enthused by Brian Conaghan’s visit on 15th March. The Library has never had so many pupils request an author’s books after a visit! Additional copies will be purchased as soon as possible.

Brian discussed his own school days, becoming a writer, his books and creative writing. Many thanks to Brian for visiting as part of NLC’s Read to Succeed initiative. We were so pleased to have you visit!

S1 book gifting

For the third year running, all S1 pupils in North Lanarkshire will be gifted a book! This is funded by NL Scottish Attainment Funding to support and promote reading for pleasure.

If you’re in S1, your English teacher will have shared the book list and the form for you to register your choice. Please see Ms Boyd in the library if you have any questions or would like to discuss the fantastic books on offer.

Word game

If you’re on Twitter, you probably know all about Wordle!

If not, Wordle is a great word game that is played online.Β  You have to work out what the 5 letter word is within 6 guesses; hints are given to any correct letter. Note that American spelling can be used (e.g. O instead of OU).

It is free with no adverts and as there is only one game a day, you can’t get too addicted…Β Try it today!

Tam o Shanter

Celebrate Burns Night on 25th January with one of Robert Burns’ most famous poems, Tam o Shanter. It features witches, gruesome creatures and a terrifying chase as Tam runs for his life!

Scots Hoose offers different options for you to read or hear this poem. Read the original version by Robert Burns or take a swatch at the video version. The poem has also been adapted into a comic which you can read online in colour or black and white.

S2 author visit

Author and illustrator John Fardell gave an informative and interactive session with selected S2 pupils last week, as part of our Book Week Scotland events. John discussed his books and writing, as well as giving some fantastic creative writing tips, before the pupils produced their own scenarios and illustrations. John, Mr Scott and Ms Boyd were all very impressed by their ideas and input!

This Live Literature Scotland session was fully funded by the Scottish Book Trust.
