Kilsyth Academy’s superb production of ‘Disco Inferno’ played to three packed audiences last week, and was an outstanding success.
It is the summer of 1976. Outside, the weather is as hot as the fashion and Jack is about to celebrate a 21st birthday he’ll never forget. Working late in a London club, ‘Disco Inferno’, Jack meets Lady Marmalade – the Devil’s right hand lady. Dreaming of becoming successful, he makes a Faustian pact with her, trading his soul to fulfil his wildest fantasies. Sound like an ideal bargain? Think again. He becomes an instant and international success. However, success proves hollow. Jack has fame and fortune but is losing his girlfriend, Jane. If only he could turn back time and make one more trade, trading all he has for something far more important…
This highly acclaimed musical combines a hilarious script, fantastic characters and a score of hits from an unforgettable era of glitter, flares and platform shoes. ‘Disco Inferno’ is a high energy musical guaranteed to warm hearts, get feet tapping and audiences leaving the auditorium with a daft grin of pleasure and the fondest memories of a sensational era.
Gordon Airlie, as always, gave a very accomplished performance, as principal boy Jack, and Connie Kirwan was outstanding as his opposite number, Jane. Connie McFarlane played Kathy, opposite Ross Leonard, who took the part of the egotistical Heathcliffe, and Gavin Glover played Tom, opposite Nicola Wilson, as Maggie – all superb performers too. Rachel Kimmett and Courtney Forsyth shared the role as Lady Marmalade, the Devil’s right-hand woman and both gave very alluring and confident portrayals. The other principals were Ross Quinn as Terry, Martin Murphy as Lily, Mr Rennie as Duke and Mr Sexton as Nick Diablo, all of whom had a great week, providing superb entertainment. The Principals were ably supported by a great ensemble cast and a large group of very talented dancers, whose choreographed routines were a highlight of this amazing production.
The show was the culmination of many months of rehearsals and was testimony to the hard work of Director Miss Rachel Langan and Musical Directors Mr George Russell and Mr Gordon Clarke. The superb choreography was arranged by Mrs Jill Marshall and the live band comprised Mr Russell, Mr Clarke, Mr Brown and Mr Mulrine. Many other staff and pupils helped behind the scenes providing costumes and props, building the set, applying make-up, moving scenery and coordinating sound and light. All their contributions were crucial to the show’s success and our thanks go to them. In addition, thanks to all staff who were involved in front of house activities, preparation and selling of tickets and programmes, moving furniture and in providing hospitality. It was truly a team effort and congratulations go to everyone who was involved, for their part in this excellent climax to the school year.
