Literacy

Literacy is at the heart of learning at Kildrum Primary School. We want every child to develop the skills and confidence they need to become effective communicators, enthusiastic readers and successful writers.

We follow the North Lanarkshire Literacy Strategy, using a range of engaging learning approaches that encourage children to take an active role in their learning. Reading and writing are a key priority across the school, supported by structured phonics and spelling programmes and regular opportunities to develop literacy skills.

Developing a Love of Reading

We place a strong emphasis on reading for enjoyment. From Primary 1 onwards, children are encouraged to read regularly and develop positive reading habits that will support them throughout their lives.

Our aim is for every child to become a confident, independent reader who enjoys books and values reading as an important life skill.

Literacy Across the Curriculum

Literacy is not taught in isolation. Children use and develop their literacy skills in all areas of learning, including Science, Social Studies, Technologies and Health and Wellbeing.
