Planets in the Solar System

We took advantage of the little dry weather we had to examine the distance between the planets. We worked out that each metre on the astroturf was equivalent to 58 million kilometres in the Solar System. We had to measure and label each planet at the correct distance from our pretend sun. When we returned to class we then had to calculate the approximate distance in millions of kilometres from the sun. We used an online calculator to do this.

We were very lucky as the rain started to pour down just as we were talking about our results. The children were disappointed they didn’t get to play ‘Explosion in Space’ You really can’t rely on Scottish weather!

Multiplication

Primary 5 is beginning their new maths topic on multiplication. It is very important that we learn all our times tables from 2 to 10 by the end of this topic. We need multiplication in all areas of maths and in our daily lives. Please make sure you practise your tables every night! There are lots of fun ways to learn your tables. We have been using 12 sided dice this week. Perhaps you could try playing cards, or noughts and crosses at home! Maybe you could invent a new times table game we could play in class.

There are also many games online to improve your tables. Come on Primary 5 let’s do this!

Symmetry

This week we have been focusing on symmetry in Maths. We have been looking at one and two lines of symmetry in shapes. We then looked at Minecraft characters and Mrs Horner set us a challenge. We had to create Minecraft characters but they had to be symmetrical! It was a tough job but our results were totally awesome.  Mrs Horner was extremely proud of our symmetrical skills. Have a look and tell us what you think.

Christmas Party

We had a fantastic time at our Christmas party. We all had our fancy clothes on and we looked amazing! Mrs Horner thinks we are the best looking class in the school, as well as the best dancers, singers and groovers!

The Solar System

As you know our next topic will focus on learning about the Solar System. As part of our shared planning I would like you to note down activities that you would like to carry out during this topic. Remember once you have your chosen activity you must record an aim or target (learning intention) for your activity. Get your thinking caps on and get posting! I can’t wait to read about all your fantastic ideas!

Remembrance Day

On Thursday we discussed the reason we commemorate  Remembrance Day and the significance of the poppy. After our discussion we made our own 3D poppies and on Friday we wrote instructions on how to make the poppy. We also used the programme Splosh to create some poppies, we created these by adding and filling shapes. Here are some of the photos we took on Thursday.
