Planets in the Solar System

We took advantage of the little dry weather we had to examine the distance between the planets. We worked out that each metre on the astroturf was equivalent to 58 million kilometres in the Solar System. We had to measure and label each planet at the correct distance from our pretend sun. When we returned to class we then had to calculate the approximate distance in millions of kilometres from the sun. We used an online calculator to do this.

We were very lucky as the rain started to pour down just as we were talking about our results. The children were disappointed they didn’t get to play ‘Explosion in Space’ You really can’t rely on Scottish weather!
