Science – Melting Ice

imageimageimageimageimageimageimage

We were investigating whether the size, shape or amount of ice cubes had an impact on the speed of melting. We learned about variables and how to write a hypothesis. We had to make sure our tests were fair and we recorded our results. It was great fun but the ice was very cold!

Our classroom

We have been working hard on our displays for our new topic – Water. We have been learning all about why we use water & how water can be used for energy. We have looked at the water cycle and we have been learning about Claude Monet. We enjoyed painting our Waterlily pictures and making 3D waterlilies.

Water presentation

We had a visit from Jim Raeburn, Griff’s cousin and a former Chapelhall Primary pupil. He works for Raeburn Drilling and was here to help us with our water topic. He told us about his job and how he drills for water. He explained to us how the water is taken from far under the ground and is prepared for us to use. We also received some gifts from him including rulers which we will use in our class. It was very interesting listening to Jim explaining how he worked hard at school so that he could go on to train to do the job he does now.

Cooking – tropical smoothies

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

We made tropical smoothies as part of our cooking week. We learned how to prepare for our cooking lesson by washing our hands properly and removing the fruit skins.  We learned how to hold a knife properly and how to cut the fruit into chunks. We then added yoghurt and fruit juice and blended it all together. We are going to write a set of instructions for our writing lesson so we can make them at home. Our smoothies were delicious!

Term 4 Water IDL Homework Grid

Here is a copy of the term 4 homework grid for our last topic ‘Water’.  A copy will be stapled into the homework diaries as normal after the Easter holidays. As always the tasks should be completed over the weekend and handed in on a Monday morning to give the children a little more time.

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We can name some of each and can describe shapes using the terms edges, faces and vertices. We have also been using tally marks to collect data and have carried out surveys and displayed our results in a bar graph.
