There was great excitement in our nursery today when the postman brought a very special delivery- five real life very hungry caterpillars! The five Painted Lady caterpillars will be living and growing in our nursery for the next few weeks so we will be able to find out first hand about the life cycle of a butterfly. We are going to record how they change each day and we will be writing and drawing about what we find out. We are also going to use our research skills to find out some information about butterflies from books and websites.
Time!
We have started to learn about time in nursery. This week, we were talking about routines in our nursery and how to put events in order. Have a look!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
We are starting a new topic this week based around the fabulous book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We are using this book to help us with lots of our learning. This week after hearing the story, we have been doing lots of activities about symmetry and have been counting on and back from 10, just like the Hungry Caterpillar. We hope to share lots of our learning with you over the next few weeks.
Writing our letters
We are learning how to hold a pencil properly. This is helping us to try to write some of the sounds we know. We are doing lots of practice and our letters look great.
Active families Gym class
We had lots of friends and families who came along to our Active families gym class this week. We showed everyone how we do our warm up, our cool down and we showed everyone how to play some games which show we know about how to be safe with harmful liquids. all of our visitors were very impressed and we hope to invite them to see more of our fabulous work soon.
Outdoor Literacy
This week we have been having fun learning how to write some letters. We used chalk to write really colourful letter in our playground.
Zoo Lab Visit
We had a visit from Rebecca who works at Zoo Lab on Tuesday. She brought lots of interesting animals for us to meet and she told us some fascinating facts about them. Did you know that most mini-beasts have no bones? Did you know that cockroaches can survive for a year in a freezer? Did you know that Giant African snails have more than 10,000 teeth? We even got to handle some of the animals. It was really interesting and we are looking forward to finding out more about mini-beasts when we start our new topic.
A very busy nursery
We have been studying the size of objects in nursery recently. This week, we looked to put objects into the correct container by studying the different qualities of our objects. Some objects were tall, some were wide and others were inbetween! Have a look at how we got on!
We have also been looking at the properties of water. We found out that water can be a liquid, it can be heated up to make steam and can even be frozen into a solid! Wow!
Finally, we look forward to seeing all the mums, dads and anyone else who would like to come along to our ‘Active Families’ session tomorrow. You can find out what time your child will be taking part by having a look at our nursery notice board. It should be a lot of fun!
Heavy or Light
We have been learning to describe objects in different ways recently. This week, we focussed on using the words “heavy” or “light” to describe the weight of objects. We decided to conduct a test using a container of water to decide whether an object was heavy or whether it was light. If an object was heavy, it would sink! If it was light, it would float!
Safety with liquids
As part of our topic about water, we are learning about harmful liquids which might be in our house but we mustn’t touch. The teachers showed us lots of bottles and liquids we might has seen and we were able to sort them into safe and unsafe. We have been learning that medicines can make us better if we are ill but only adults are allowed to touch them.
